So it's after midnight here... which means it's officially Canada Day! To celebrate, our theme for this contest will be Canadian content in science fiction and fantasy!

Your entry should satisfy at least one of the following criteria:
  • be from a show or movie filmed in Canada
  • be from a show or movie set in Canada
  • feature a Canadian performer
  • feature a Canadian character
(I'm fairly flexible; if something doesn't meet these specific criteria, but you can still demonstrate a Canadian connection, I'll probably allow it! :) )

And of course, the other usual rules: maximum size of 200 x 200, 1 MB, and SFW. You may enter up to two avatars, and contest will be open for about a week.

There are a significant number of possibilities out there. If you're not aware of any right away, an internet search should turn up something you may like! :)

(For those wondering about the thread title, yes, "CanCon" is an abbreviation of "Canadian content", and is primarily used in terms of Canadian content rules imposed by the CRTC to help prevent our entertainment industry from being completely overwhelmed by our neighbour. More details here, if you're interested.)

To start us off, I'll offer up a "four-fer":

- Canadian performer Tatiana Maslany, portraying Canadian Alison Hendrix, in Orphan Black, which was both filmed and set in Canada

(I'll enter a second one later.)

Have fun! :techman:

A Canadian playing a Canadian disguising himself as an Australian playing a Canadian.

An American and a French-American playing Canadians in a film set in Canada (and also shot there? Maybe? Anybody know?)

The film is set in Manitoba, do they do say "aboot" there?

Anyway, the movie makes it pretty clear that the characters are making fun of stereotypes.

Oh, it wasn’t a criticism or anything! It’s just something we laugh about here because that’s one of the main stereotypes we hear about us from the US, but we never hear “aboot” in our day-to-day lives. :)

To answer your question, TBH I’ve never been to Manitoba (I don’t travel much), so I don’t know for sure. But that type of pronunciation is generally something I associate more with an East Coast/Maritimes accent.

Pretty much wherever Canadians come from, Americans hear aboot. It is because we shorten the vowel sound between the b and the t. No, it doesn't sound like boot but that is the close analogy.

For fun though, try getting a midwesterner to say the word "pin".

I am fairly close to the border with Michigan. Although I haven't done so in many years, when I used to occasionally cross over, the Michiganders tended to sound the same way we did... except for the short a sound. Any time they said a word with a short a, it always sounded a little "off" to my ears.

Gah, I don't know what is going with Photobucket, my GIFs all are cutting off before the end and an annoying watermark in the middle.

Any luck with PB or an alternate image hosting service? I was going to try to hold off adding my other entries until I saw what you entered.

Actually, my entry does seem to be OK, so here it is

Tamsin, played by Canadian Rachel Skarsten on the Canadian series Lost Girl. Not sure it's actually set in Canada though, the show was always rather vague about where it was set.
I think the original goes on for another second or two, but this gets the point across.
I tried to switch over to imagur, but it wouldn't accept even a single one of the close to a dozen usernames I tried, even just my name.

Maybe you'd have better success with PostImage?

There were so many choices, but since no one has entered Firefly, I had to go with Firefly.

- Canadians Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite as Mal Reynolds and Kaylee Frye in Firefly

(I actually had another one picked out for my third entry, before realizing we were only allowed two. What was the OP thinking?? )

And I guess it's been about a week, so Last Call! I'm planning to post the poll in about 28 hours or so.
