I... what?
"The biggest win for the night for Star Trek: Discovery was for Best New Media Television Series. The latest Trek show beat out genre entries from other steaming services including Altered Carbon (Netflix), Black Mirror (Netflix), The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu), Mindhunter (Netflix), Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams (Amazon / Sony Television), and Stranger Things (Netflix)."
Literally any of those would have been a more deserved win. Though obviously not as high profile as Trek. But yeah... I don't agree with this.
"In addition, Sonequa Martin-Green won for Best Actress on a Television Series, for her performance as Michael Burnham. She beat out stiff competition including Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Adrianne Palicki (The Orville), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story: Cult) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo)."
This though I'm completely fine with!

Yeah, SMG might not be the best actress Trek ever had during it's long history. But IMO this year she was the best of the bunch. Lena Headey is always awesome, but her performance in GoT ̶s̶̶e̶̶a̶̶s̶̶o̶̶n̶̶ ̶̶8̶ season 7 wasn't noticeably better than in the ̶s̶̶e̶̶v̶̶e̶̶n̶ six seasons before that. Haven't seen Fargo, so no comments on Winstead (who is also usually great). But you don't have to be the best actress of all time to get an award. You have to be better than the competition. And I can easily see SMG's performance as the best of the nominated.

The only problems with Burnham as a character were in the writing - the over abundance of speeches instead of dialogue with actual acting (which was usually great), and her multiple conflicting backstories. Her being "raised Vulcan" meant she was meant to suppress her emotional acting - arguibly her biggest strength - during her introduction, thus she came across as very cold, which conflicted with her hot-headed decision regarding the klingons and her no-bullshit attitude as a prisoner.

But by god, did SMG turn that around and made the role her own during the season. At the end of the season, the character was completely her own, well-rounded, and IMO even the writing reflected that, as the writers saw her performance and now had a clearer vision what type of character they were writing for.

Overall, 50:50 deserved wins. Getting a "best series" award surely is not a bad thing for a Trek fan! Though quite honestly, I'm a bit more sad about the other quality series being snubbed (I'm not exclusively a Trek fan, more a high concept sci-fi fan, and those other shows were vastly superiour in this regard).

SMG's win is absolutely, totally, rightfully deserved though!

Most popular streaming show, getting awards, announcing more shows...

Discovery
is "failing" all over the place recently! :D
Someone will be along shortly to explain how this actually means Discovery is a complete failure.

The best series award surprises me, if I'm honest. Handmaid's Tale and Stranger Things on that list were much better shows this year imho. But I guess DSC is a more 'classic' sci-fi show being a space opera. Black Mirror was weak this year, Altered Carbon and Electric Dreams were dull. Didn't see Mindhunters.

Congratulations to the cast and crew for winning best new media television series! Kudos for beating out some pretty hefty contenders.

And special congrats to Sonequa. I agree Rahul that by the end of the season she'd really made Burnham her own character. Great acting work! So glad she got some recognition.

I'm not so sure. I can't comment on Mindhunter or Altered Carbon, but I have seen the rest. I would only really put Discovery or Black Mirror at the top for the this series (I probably would actually be in favour of Black Mirror slightly, tbh), but the others have not been as enjoyable. If it had been the first season of Stranger Things, I'd call that a contender too. But the second series didn't really capture me in the same way. Electric Dreams, I enjoy... but only mildly (which is why I'm surprised it wasn't the winner).

You got me there...!
I haven't even watched 'Stranger Things' season 2 yet!
I'm so much behind things, I thought it was the first season that was nominated and snubbed by DIS x.x

Congrats to SMG and the producers for the wins.

Lena Headey is always awesome, but her performance in GoT season 8 wasn't noticeably better than in the seven seasons before that.

I think you are off by one season here. GoT season 8 comes next year.

The second season of Stranger Things is good, but not as good as the first season. In some ways they took a "same but bigger" approach to the story. I definitely enjoyed a lot of it, but I'm hoping they go a different direction with season three.
