Sequel to Fire Upon the Deep coming in Oct

I've got my preorder from Amazon.

The Tines are one of my favorite fictional species. I can see the same thing happening to humans once we have our cell phones embedded in our heads.

Yes, me too. Getting the real book not the e-book. I'm curious to see how Vinge will elaborate on the advancements since 1993 in the net as well, though the focus will be on a primitive world.

I just saw this on the internet yesterday. I was truly shocked he was revisiting the universe.

^ Why is that shocking? He's already written two novels in that continuity, A Fire Upon the Deep and its way-way-earlier prequel A Deepness in the Sky. So why not a third?

I think it's shocking in the sense that it took him that long to get to writing an actual sequel to the original story. I never read his prequel, but I'm glad that we're finally getting something to continue the story within that timeline. I'm also curious to see how he adapts the modern internet to this.

I kind of wish he had already written more novels in that universe, but I can envisage why VV chose not to. I expect he might be of the opinion that more is less unless there's a real point to the story that he has to tell -- other than cynically relieving his readers of their cash. He sprinkled a few clues around in the first two novels to allow one to imagine how they might be connected. I'm expecting good things of the sequel.
