Semi OT: Trent Roman, Kevin Lauderdale and others twist Cthulhu

KLauderdale

Red Shirt
(I don't feel guilty since at least two of us are regular posters here)

Cthulhu Unbound Vol. 1 is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com:

This anthology from small publisher (and zombie fan favorite) Permuted Press collects new stories inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, but told in genres other than pulp horror. There's space opera, a "missing chapter" from Moby Dick, Lovecraft by way of P.G. Wodehouse (my story), and many others.

SFWA members: as part of the publicity program, I'll have a few copies to give away. Just private message me with your shipping address.

Big pimpin'.

My contribution is inspired of military science-fiction, if we've any aficionados of the genre here, which uses the background of the classic Lovecraft story, "The Shadow out of Time", for its premise.

Ficititiously yours, Trent Roman

Now that DOES intruige me, Trent. I'll have to check that out - thanks for the (self-interest-based, I know) heads up. :techman:

How do you guys go about getting stories into anthologies? I've always had a hard time figuring out how to track down listings for anthology openings.

For my part, usually by trolling the market listings at websites like Ralan's Webstravaganza and Duotrope's Digest (SpecFicWorld has a good listing database, too, but you have to pay for access unless you're a contributor to their fiction line). I should note, however--since you are a published novelist--that most of the anthologies listed here pay out below professional pay scales, and tend to have limited runs (I couldn't get into SWFA, for instance, on the basis of my anthology sales alone despite having quite a few at this point). From what I've obversed, most professional-scale anthologies tend to be invitation-based, which, I imagine, will depend on more ephemeral factors like networking and recognition within the community.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

This one was an open call. Anyone who wanted to could submit. And (here's a plus for some of you out there), usually small press projects like this aren't limited to U.S. residents only. Like Trent said, we get $25 and one free copy, but I am just geeky enough to love to see my name in print, no matter how little it pays.

I love Duotrope's free, weekly newsletter with notes on new anthologies / markets looking for material. You can subscribe at:
http://www.duotrope.com/newsletter.aspx

Also, you can google "small press" and go directly to various publishers' sites. Some of them tell you what they're reading for. That's how I found this. Dayton Ward had mentioned Permuted Press in relation to something else, so I started checking out http://www.permutedpress.com every other week. When I saw their request for "cross-genre" Lovecraftian horror, I had the idea instantly. (There'll be a free copy going his way as thanks.)
