A random thought has just occurred to me, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

What is Commander Sela, instead of being the daughter of Tasha Yar from an alternate timeline, was actually that Tasha Yar? She was captured at Narendra III where a high-ranking Tal Shiar officer noted her different uniform and advanced tactical knowledge, and had her transferred to a specialist facility. There she was placed in stasis whilst her mind was probed for information before beginning a programme of brain washing, only to be revived a couple decades later as a new operative to be used against Starfleet, in particular Picard and the Enterprise.

At first I thought she was...

I don't know that it makes a difference whether it's Evil!Tasha or Evil!Daughter of Tasha? Either way, unless Starfleet was going to authorize a mission to "rescue" her, you're left with the same result.

And either way, I would have preferred a character who showed a bit more ambiguity with regards to Our Heroes. "I hate you all!" isn't good for character growth.

Now, if Tasha had shown up subsequently (never killed but rather imprisoned, say) and had tried to get Sela to repent her evil ways, so to speak...that could have led to some interesting scenes, assuming Crosby could pull it off.

I could see this being true, we are supposed to buy that the Romulans cloned Picard back when he was a nobody, they seem to be into ridiculous plots.

Let's see: The Romulans cloned Picard. I think Romulan cyberneticists were mentioned as being interested in Data. And you raise this possibility. And I recall mention of dragging the Enterprise as a war prize to Romulus. Given what happened to the Enterprise-C, it is likely the crew would not have been simply returned to Federation space, and instead would have become prisoners. So plausibly, there could be a scenario where the Romulans had a plot to replace the crew of the Enterprise-D with brainwashed or double agent dopplegangers.

That would be an interesting spin on DS9's "Inquisition". Starfleet recalls the E-D because they've been led to believe that the command staff may have been compromised without even them being aware of it. Could have even been a two-parter or a short story arc.

Except I can't really imagine TNG going to that kind of place.
