Seeking Major Tom - Shatner's new album

Seeking Major Tom

:wtf: WHY????? :wtf:

...would anybody here actually buy this?

I heard some clips on an NPR interview with Shatner. Having an appreciation for the original works of the songs he is singing, I find it painful to listen to his interpretations... Will this CD suffer sufficiently bad sales to finally get through to him, so he'll hear the message "Enough already, Bill!!"?

I really enjoyed Has Been. I thought it was a genuinely good album. That's Me Trying is a super song.

I'll buy this because I'm odd like that, but having listened through on Spotify it's mostly novelty and not much heart. Which is a shame.

There's a fine line between "so crappy, it's kitschy and almost cool" and just plain crappy.

After listening to a few of the samples here...........yeah, I'm not seeing anything even remotely cool. It's just kind of embarrassing, really.

I'm really disappointed, because Has Been was a legitimately great album. His "Common People" cover was amazing, for instance. But everything I've heard off this has just been bad, and not in a good way. :(

I bought it. Has Been is a much better album.
The tracks I like off of SMT seem to be because of the guest vocalists, like Toots on "Walking on the Moon" and Bootsy Collins on "She Blinded Me with Science."

"Iron Man" is complete shit, though.

I couldn't finish listening to his version of Bohemian Rhapsody. It's not a patch on Rolf Harris's. ;)

Google if you dare.

i loved Has Been but i haven't had a chance to check out his new album yet.

I have no idea who worked on SMT, but Has Been was arranged by Ben Folds. I think that has a lot to do with how well it turned out.

Rolf's version is fine, but I couldn't finish listening to Bill's either. Some of Shatner's weirder excursions still possess a certain charm, but that quality seemed to be completely absent from his take on "Bohemian Rhapsody".

@ ManOnTheWave: Seeking Major Tom was produced by Adam Hamilton, former bassist for L.A. Guns. According to Wikipedia, his other producing credits include recent "comeback" albums by Leif Garrett and Vanilla Ice. Ugh. :(

I just got my copy today. I hope it's at least entertaining; I'm certainly not expecting it to be on the same level as Has Been.

Space Cowboy is awesome, though. :D
That said, Has Been was pure brilliance. After having listened to 4 songs from this album, I would have to say it's "meh".

Thanks, by the way, StolenThunder. I'd never heard of Spotify and so checked it out. What a novel idea.

I found his Bohemian Rhapsody on youtube, listened to it with my gf. We were both pissing ourselves laughing.

I really liked Has Been and I was just going to buy this one, but given some of the comments here I might just check out some of the tracks before I do.

It's nearly as good as The Transformed Man IMO. Nearly.

His earlier live recording of Rocketman at the 1977 Science Fiction Film Awards was far superior to the studio version on this though.

I have The Transformed Man as well as Leonard Nimoy's Highly Illogical.

I bought them almost 20 years ago at a CD shop that carried imports. I was curious.

But with youtube & other places to hear it beforehand, I don't plan to get SMT. Lots of other things to throw my money at these days.
