Section 31

The problem though is that Section 31 isn't a evil organzation in the sense that they want to do evil things out of cruelity or rule the world. There is enough shades of grey to their motives to make them fit within the boundries of Trek sensibilities. All you really need to sell them is a character that is sympathetic to degree like Sloan. If people like a character they will forgive just about any sins when it comes to fiction IMO. If your Section 31 agents are carboard villians then it might feel wierd but carboard villians will destroy any type of villians you use.

Evil/not evil, I think their big thing is not maintaining transparency (to use a recent overused political word). They're shadowy and sneaky, but then I'm reminded of Picard's huge and pretty damning lecture to Wesley about how Starfleet represents the pursuit of truth.

I don't mind seeing S31 show up. Hell, as a die hard DS9 fan, I'd love to see S31 in nuTrek. But not as the main villains. Let them show up on the side so to speak. Maybe one of the crew knows someone, who knows someone, affiliated with S31 and that person helps them get out of a bind. Or into one.

i dont know if it has been said but if you retcon some of tos to consider section 31 was already around they fit into some of the stories like enterprise incident.
it would be like section 31 to recruit kirk and spock to get the cloaking device.
and a much darker version of section like what we will see later in deep space nine could have been behind the conspiracy in undiscovered country.

I think there was a similar discussion like that a few months ago about retconning Section 31 into pre DS9 days. My only problem with that (and y'know, i'm open to corrections) is that those incidents make Section 31 out to be loud and sloppy, as opposed to being expertly covert and meticulously planned.

they are an enemy that cannot be stopped and has ultimate authority in the Federation.

Imagine if several members of the Enterprise crew turned out to be Section 31 agents and Spock ended up neck pinching them and mind melding with them. Awesome! :alienblush: We'd find out plenty of delicious details about the organisation.
All I will say is all of our operatives have been trained to resist any mind-meld attempts.

They wouldn't even make great villains without turning them into Bond villains, I just can't see any way to fit them in - they're not villainy enough, I couldn't see them trying to destroy the Enterprise.

I sort of agree. I do think they could be used though. Maybe the villian is a rouge Section 31 agent or maybe Section 31 is holding some alien tech that the Enterprise crew needs to stop the main villian. I could see them playing a role within a story but not as the main villians.
