I don't know what the requirements are now, but back in the ’60s, I took two years of Spanish starting in eighth grade. Today I can remember enough of the language to converse with two people named Pablo and Luisa, if one of them is well and the other has a cold.In regards to the United States, it's actually pretty common for students to start learning another language in Junior High. From Junior High through High School I had Spanish classes
I also remember all the boys having a crush on the Spanish teacher -- she was a Texan Latina hottie who drove a gold Corvette Stingray. Off topic, but I had to say it.
