Search For Spock - "face in the clouds" trailer?

I came across someone on ebay selling film frames from Star Trek III, which actually belong to a trailer - one I've never seen before, featuring a striking shot of Spock's face superimposed over the cloudy sky. There's also a distinct title card and the announcement "the adventure continues on June 1st."

Anybody seen this one? I only know of the US trailer, the international trailer, and the ShoWest promo, and none of them have these shots. The rest of the frames for sale are all from "stealing the Enterprise."

I vaguely recall seeing it in a short television commercial shortly before the release date. I don't think I've seen it since.

Wow. I’ve never seen that. Someone must have more info.

it’s like the radio spots I remember for Star Trek V. I can’t find any evidence of those either.

In spite of everything there's still alot of little random things with the franchise that have never surfaced. Even back in the 80s it was customary for big movies to have two trailers, but the official sources for II to V only present one.

Doing some snooping, I found a mention of "Spock in the clouds" in a youtube comment:

Posted on this copy of the "international" trailer. (I don't know if we ever confirmed for sure that's what THIS trailer is, but it's a good enough guess considering it was found on a UK VHS and seems geared a little more toward those less familiar with Star Trek).

As for this filmstrip, going by the description it sounds like this is most likely the teaser trailer. Considering the teaser posters it would make sense if "Spock's face" was all part of a recurring motif for this leg of the campaign.

I remember seeing this poster outside the theater at the shopping center where I worked at that time in a music store. I thought it looked cheap and goofy.

But I was excited to see the movie on opening night at a theater on M St NW in DC. I went with a few friends and they asked me to drive their car. I'm a meek, law-abiding citizen. When we were waiting behind another car to pay and exit the underground parking garage, we noticed the only thing separating our exit lane from the entrance lane was some thin flexible bollards. They chanted for me to go for it, so I figured: why not? It wouldn't hurt anyone. So, we escaped via the entrance lane while the attendant yelled at us to stop. For a block or two, I expected to see flashing lights in the mirror, but we got away.

I hope no one turns me in after reading this story.

The 'transparent stylized Spock face' poster (by Roger Huyssen and Gerard Huerta) was the one used in outdoor public advertising and theater posters in the US. The Bob Peak one was used in newspaper advertising.

I very randomly came across this thread which is perfect because I've been collecting the Trek movie trailers on 35mm film. A couple weeks ago I got a Search for Spock trailer and expected it to be the one that shows the Enterprise exploding, but it was one I had never seen before with Spock's face in the clouds. I watched it on a flatbed film editor and recorded the playback.

That is the ideal teaser/trailer for the film. Why they went with the one sayiing "HEY Y'ALL, WATCH THE FINAL MISSION OF THE ENTERPRISE!" (pew pew boom boom fry-fry smash)

They really re-kerjigger the verbiage and draw it out longer. Which starts out okay, but then comes 0:45 and-- oops... they make it look like they're all fried like marshmallows. Anyone not put off by the teaser would be pleasantly surprised, but that initial one you'd linked to doesn't go overboard or spoil anything, never mind so glaringly and flagrantly and other adjective-ladenly so.

Side note: The ad for the Dracula movie (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) that popped up looked really good and I'm going to go out and see it upon release:

No worries, I promise to bathe first, but I digress.

.

I was already part of the pre-sold audience, but this trailer sent me into a panic and I HAD to see if everyone got out okay (hey I was a kid).

I imagine since Roddenberry/Susan Sackett liked to pull the rug out from under Harve Bennett with spoilers to get the fans to hate him, ol' Harve just leaned into it for all it was worth.

I actually own this teaser trailer on Super 8 film. I bought it at a store called Home Talkies in Sydney. I was surprised that it wasn't included on any of the DVDs or Blu-rays.

No. As Susan Sackett told me, the part of a studio that makes trailers to promote a movie is not answerable to anyone on the production team of a movie. No one was happy about the ST III trailer spoilerizing the demise of the Enterprise.
