SE DVDs Vs Ultimate Collection

I am slowly making my way through the entire franchise, buying each dvd set one by one via the best bargains I can find. I already have DS9 1-6 and Voyager 1 + 2 and I am now starting with Enterprise and will watch it all in this order: Ent 1-4, TOS 1-3, TOS Animated 1, TOS Movies 1-6 and a half, TNG 1-7, TNG Movies 7-10, DS9 1-7 and finally VOY 1-7. Now I have a problem with the movie dvds. I can either buy the special editions one by one or buy the ultimate collection they released last year or the year before. The ultimate colection for me is too expensive and will never be an ultimate collection if more movies are made. So which should I go for? Are the SEs the best bet? Your help is very much appreciated.

Well the ultimate edition is already null and void with ST XI coming out next year. But as you say you can pick up the movies indivually when it suits your budget.

I suppose I might as well get the SEs individually, but the thing I can't stand about the SEs is that they sometimes change the packaging or add extra features or don't bother releasing SEs of the future movies in the same style. I am a completist and I like them all to have an order stylistically. Stupid, I know. It reminds me of the Bond dvds, I got all the new SEs but am waiting to see if they will release an SE of Casino Royale in the same style before I even consider buying it.

Are you referring to this?

That's just the 10 DE's/SE's in a box, it doesn't give you any bonus discs or special packaging apart from the box. It's probably cheaper to buy the boxed set, though; Amazon sells the individual movies for $10-12 each, but the boxed set is $81.99, or approximately $8.20 per film.

Films 2-7 in the SE DVD's have the same style packaging, but TMP is different, the box set is just these DVD's in a box, so you will be getting the same thing whether you buy them seperately or in the set, (except if you buy the set you get a box ).

Star Trek XI will be so different from the other movies that I wouldn't want to have it in a single box with I to X anyway.

I believe most UK bought DVD players will play at least R1 as well as R2, but only G'kar could say if his does.

The_Book_Of_G'Kar, keeping checking Amazon UK for the Movie DVD box set, I bought it from there a few months back for 40 pounds and the next week the price had gone back up, but I have seen the price drop down into the 30 range after that so keep an eye out.

I think you should pick up the ultimate box set if you can get it at the right price. It's a nice set in a lovely box, they are in slim packs so it takes up less room and 10 is a nice even number. When Star Trek 11 comes out there may be another box set but will be expensive again. Also if the next movie is a reboot it would feel out of place with the currenty continuity of movies. So it could be the ultimate collection of current Star Trek that won't be related to future movies. And as I said, a 10 DVD box is a nice round number.

In New Zealand it's impossible to get anything but a multi-region player.

So I heard, we have 4 DVD-Players in our house, all 4 will play R1 and 2 and 1 of them plays all regions.

Deepdiscount.com has the 10-disc set for $69.48, shipped.

Don't hold your breath.

If you are worried about having all your covers look alike, you can always download or create a custom cover. There are several sites out there where artist make their own. Many sites have them for free (like Dr. zaius') while others will ask for a "donation" to the site in exchange for "credits" where you can download various covers. The credit exchange is usually a pretty good deal, imo.

I encountered that in Singapore, too. Even so the DVD stores insist you can't return a disc just for being the wrong region.

Sad to say, after spending pretty much the whole decade in Singapore my contract ended so I'm out of the country. I'm hoping I can get back, though, sooner rather than later.
