SCOUT COLUMBIA - A Star Trek Fan Fiction

Admiral Archer

Captain
Captain
Hey guys! This is an idea I've been tossing around, but I don't have any specific story lines associated with it yet. Here is what I DO have: an outline of the setting, characters, and general plot. I would like someone creative enough to take these characters and write episodic stories with them, assuming they are a likable enough crew. All right, now to see where this goes:

SCOUT COLUMBIA

A Star Trek Fan-Fiction Pitch

Story by VINCE COLEMAN

Based upon "STAR TREK" created by GENE RODDENBERRY

SETTING:
This is a science-fiction action adventure fan series based upon Gene Roddenberry's STAR TREK. When: the 23rd century, specifically the year 2274, stardate 7480. Where: aboard a mid-sized mobile research platform, a short-range scout spaceship called the USS COLUMBIA. Registry NCC-621. Built in orbit of the planet Jupiter, on the moon of Europa, the COLUMBIA is a Hermes-class scout, and is home to 200 humanoid life forms, whom all serve an Earth-based Starfleet.

CHARACTERS:
CAPTAIN JANUARY NORTH: Human Caucasian female, 33 years old. The youngest officer to command a scout ship, she is extremely intelligent. Her hair and eyes are dark brown in spite of her pale skin, and she stands tall at almost 1.8 meters in height. Slender but athletic build. She is an intimidating force of will, and although she is intellectually unchallenged and a real "renaissance woman" whose love of the arts and literature knows no bounds, she is not one to be crossed, and woe betide the man who even looks at her wrong. That being said, Captain North is a master of diplomacy, and follows the rules of the book by the letter. She is revered by her crew, and respected by her peers.

COMMANDER LANCE CARTWRIGHT: Human African-American male, 38 years old. Cartwright is the first officer of the COLUMBIA, and a formidable presence, forged from the fires of the Klingon-Federation war that claimed the lives of his parents and older brother. His hatred of the klingons was his sole reason for joining Starfleet, and he resents being stuck on a vessel which is designed for in depth scientific study. He frequently butts-heads with Captain North, but his sense of duty is flawless, and he knows not to cross her, because he grudgingly wants deep down to be more like her.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER T'OLEM: Vulcan Male, 53 years old. T'Olem is the ship's science officer. Arguably the most important member of the crew other than Captain North, T'Olem is responsible for keeping the ship's research and scientific databases up to date. He is 1.9 meters tall, and typical of most Vulcans, very lean. That being said, T'Olem is not an ordinary Vulcan. Having spent almost his entire life on Earth (he was born in Detroit, of all places) T'Olem is more prone to show emotion and accept it than his peers, making him an outcast among other Vulcans. He is kind and gentle, and even gets drunk sometimes, though it would be unwise to challenge him to a drinking competition: against T'Olem, you would lose.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER JASON CLARK: Human Caucasian male, 29 years old. Clark is the ship's chief engineer, responsible for applying the refitted and upgraded systems to the COLUMBIA that made her the ship she is today. Clark resents being relegated to ship's chief of engineering position, however, and feels he should have gotten the first officer spot. He is jealous of Cartwright, and Cartwright finds this annoying. Clark has a crush on the Captain, and once asked her out on a date, and after she turned him down, he became known among the lower ranking crew members as "The One the Captain Shot Down". He's generally the butt of most jokes on the COLUMBIA, and because of this he has relatively low self esteem.

LIEUTENANT ISABELLE PHILLIPS: Human Caucasian female, 24 years old. Phillips, or "Izzy" as the crew calls her, is the chief medical officer of the COLUMBIA. She studied medicine in Paris, France at the Starfleet Medical branch located there. Black hair and green eyes, she is very thin and lean, but also extremely healthy. She is very inexperienced, but she has an incredible amount of compassion for her patients, and a professionalism and wisdom that goes well beyond her years. She is generally on good terms with everyone on the ship, even Clark, and although he has been known to test her patience on occasion, they are still very good friends.

LIEUTENANT J'EWAD: Tellarite Male, 30 years old. J'Ewad is the ship's chief of security, and a walking tank of a man. At just shy of 2 meters tall, he is huge even for a human, much less a member of his own species, and a physical force to be reckoned with. This is counterbalanced by a demeanor of extreme lightheartedness, and a highly comical world view. To J'Ewad, everything is awesome. He is thrilled to be on the COLUMBIA, and aside from Izzy, J'Ewad is the only person on the ship who is on good terms with Clark. In fact, the two are best friends, and have known each other since childhood.

LIEUTENANT RISOKU ORION: Denebian Male, 26 years old. Orion is the chief weapons officer of the COLUMBIA. He comes from a wealthy family of Denebians who took their name for a series of stars that, on Earth, corresponds to our constellation Orion (hence the translation). Orion stands at 1.9 meters, and is also very lean. He can be frequently seen trying (and failing) to pull pranks on T'Olem, who is his best friend, and trying to challenge him to a drinking competition. Otherwise, Orion keeps to himself for the most part. On Deneb, he has a wife and three children.

PLOT:
Following the V'Ger incident of 2273, the COLUMBIA crew is assigned on a mission to follow up on previously discovered worlds, and to perform more in-depth studies of new places, peoples, and things. The COLUMBIA is also tasked with picking up and dropping off personnel from Starbases to their new homes on either planetside or orbital research facilities. The COLUMBIA is not designed for deep space study, and returns to Federation space often to pick up new officers and crewmembers.

For such a small ship, you could downgrade the ship's captain slot to a full Commander.

By the time you're looking at (post TMP), the Saladin-class Destroyers and Hermes-class Scouts were obsolete. Those still in service remained so as long as they were flyable (some were upgraded to TMP-level tech), but no new ones were being built as there were better multi-engine base hull designs to choice from. Still, it's a good ship for your mission.

Looks like a good start. Have fun writing.

I chose the name mainly from Epsilon IX subspace radio chatter in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Same ship and registry, which I believe were taken themselves from Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual. I am not sure what the refit configuration of a Hermes-class would be called, but I will change the ship to that if there's another name for it. In the story, the USS Columbia was refitted a year after the V'Ger incident, so I'm not sure if I should refer to her as a Hermes-class refit or something else entirely.

I'd leave it as a Hermes-class, and just say that it was refit / upgraded. That's how it's listed here:

In the Franz Joseph design, the scout was a Saladin-class with most of the weapons removed. I guess the idea was to make it light and fast, to go out ahead of the fleet and look for the enemy, and then run away if they found any.

In the game Star Fleet Battles, the "scout" is actually an electronics warfare ship with powerful long-range sensors. These can detect enemy ships at long range, and then be used in combat to disrupt enemy lock-on and/or enhance friendly lock-on. During peacetime, these ships can be used for survey missions.

See the differences between these:

The other point I'd like to bring up is you have a ship with ~200 crew members. Don't forget them.

When I built crew manifests, I add in the Operations Officer, who would be third in command after the captain / commanding officer and the exec officer / first officer. The Ops Officer "owns" the front of the ship, just as the Chief Engineer "owns" the back of the ship. The bridge crew and weapons department fall under him/her.

I also include a rotation of watch officers who sit in the center seat most of the time, freeing the captain / exec to do all the things they should be doing during the boring parts of the mission.

For what is essentially a science ship there seems to be a somewhat 'militant' crew, with both the Security Chief and Weapons Officer as main characters. I'd suggest combining the roles (as we've seen with Chekov, Yar, etc.) and instead increasing the number of research-based characters.

Rather than having a science officer who is a generalist, why not include several specialists, for example T'Olem could be a planetary scientist who, due to his rank, is in charge of the department, whilst there is also heads of stellar, physical, life and social sciences, some or all of whom would be included in staff briefings when planning where they will be going and what they will be looking at.

To be honest, this is my first attempt at crafting a crew that wasn't bound by the rules of casting for a fan film, and so I was trying to be as diverse as possible with the initial seven characters. My intent was to give a brief description of the main bridge crew, then hand this project off to someone else who could really flesh them out, as well as write more characters in. This was not really intended to be "my" story, but rather a spark to start a potential flame of inspiration in someone else's mind. I wanted to see what other people might do with the idea.

For a scout class vessel, your bridge crew is too senior rank-wise. Not a big deal, but I'd go something like this:

Captain North CDR
XO Cartwright LCDR
Science Officer T'olem LT
Chief Engineer Clark LT
Dr. Phillips LTJG
Mr. J'ewad LTJG
Mr. Orion ENS

With a younger, slightly less experienced crew, you can let them explore what it's like to go from the 'lower decks' to their first taste of being a department head / senior officer, albeit on a smaller scale. There's also room for people to promote later. The rank won't matter much for most stories, but when the crew 'butts heads' with higher authority, then it'll matter!

All that aside- it's your story. Do what you want to do and have at it!
