Scotty in "The Galileo Seven"

JonnyQuest037

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I rewatched this one while trying to fall asleep in the wee hours of the morning last night, and once again I was thoroughly impressed by our favorite engineer. When nearly everyone else is insubordinate nearly to the point of mutiny, Scotty keeps his wits about him, buckles down, and thinks up some clever ideas to rescue the crew out of their predicament.

People don't usually talk about this one as a great Scotty episode, but I think they should.

I agree. And while the others are ragging on Spock, Scotty gives him a sympathetic "You've got your hands full, all right," and gets back to work.

Yeah. He never even bothers weighing in on the discussion either way, he just sees the problem he has to solve, and goes to work at finding a solution.

Yeah I'm with this. Actually one of my favorite Scotty moments was after Spock jettisons the fuel and ignites it. Scotty's reactions are great.

Actually, he does--a little later on, during the argument over Gaetano's body:

BOMA: I'm sick and tired of this machine!
SCOTT: That's enough!
As a senior officer present, he could not allow that court-martial worthy behavior to go on.

I agree totally. Scotty is the most focused, dedicated professional you will ever find on board the Enterprise. Mr. Spock was very pleased with his performance on that mission indeed. Also Mr. Boma was WAY out of line on that mission. Spock should have wrote him up after they got back to the ship.

I agree with all of these comments.

Scotty is great in this episode. I can't think of too many he wasn't great in, though.

Spock probably did write Boma up after they got back. One of many in-universe reasons why we never saw Mr. Boma again, I'd wager.

I didn't really look at that as taking sides in the argument. Just saying in a succinct way that they shouldn't be wasting time on the discussion and Boma should still show the first officer the respect he's due. YMMV.

And yeah, I hope that someone wrote Boma up after that mission. He and Stiles from "Balance of Terror" could teach a seminar at the Academy on "How to be Inappropriate and Disrespectful to Mr. Spock."

Please bear in mind that I'm making this comment solely from the standpoint of the time frame in our history that this episode was produced. Given that, I wonder if there was criticism from African-American press at the time, questioning why Don Marshall was cast in a role that could be negatively stereotyped as being, in much more common parlance by whites at the time, as being an uppity character. That perceived portrayal might have been discerned not only in the scene referenced above, but what seemed to be a more general attitude that was evinced by him towards Spock at various points of the episode. That the attitude was being expressed towards an alien rather than a white person could have been claimed in such criticism, as the show's attempt to vitiate the impact of the display of that behavior that would have made Boma an obvious target for animus otherwise.

Nope. Intellectual words (overused), but all neatly set up from a wonderment that never happened as far as I've heard since the 60s. I saw Boma's performance as being based upon his comfort as an equal to express his objections for consideration by his superior officer who, he knew, would respect him if not agree with him. He would not have been so vehement if he was insecure in his position or frightened of reprisal.

He focuses on his work and he's a more senior officer. Scotty has no doubt been in tougher situations before. Plus I'm pretty sure he had a bottle stashed underneath the ship next to the antimatter containment pod, that's what he was really after.

Indeed, one of my Favorite episodes and great character study of all of the cast.

...and was pretty much the best drinker. Therefore I shall amend your statement to "Scotty is the most focused, dedicated ENGINEER you will ever find on board the Enterprise."

Yeah. I'm very surprised that Bones and Scotty didn't drink together. Well, maybe they did during the 5 year mission but was not shown onscreen.

I vaguely recall a great scene like that in one of the novels. But I can't remember which one.
