While watching a TV show (Criminal Minds) it was mentioned that the phrase "Scotty, beam me up" was never actually said. Is that true? I could swear it was said a lot.

I think the only time (or at least the closest we get to it) is in The Voyage Home.

  4. wikipedia says:
"Though it has become irrevocably associated with the series and films, the exact phrase was never actually spoken in any Star Trek television episode or film."

    but then..:

It’s almost in the Jimmy Buffett song, ‘Boat Drinks’

‘… I'd like to go where the pace or life's slow.
Could you beam me somewhere, Mister Scott?
Any old place here on Earth or in space.
You pick the century and I'll pick the spot.’

    Cheers,

Thanks for responding everyone. To be honest, now that I see your answers, I may have gotten the quote confused. I don't know if the word Scotty came first or last. I hate it when an annoying little factoid like this gets stuck in my brain. Had to find out if I remembered right or not.

There's a way to tell if a person is a Star Trek fan or not.

Just say "Beam me up Scotty." One person might smile and make a motion with his/her hand like flipping open a communicator. Another person might get irritated and say Kirk never said that.

One guess as to which one is the Star Trek fan.

    In a similar vein:
The movie "Casablanca" has a lot of famous quotes but Humphrey Bogart as Rick never said 'Play it again Sam'. And in the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan films, Weismuller never said 'Me Tarzan you Jane'.

"But Cap'n, you're like fifty feet away. It's more like 'Scotty, beam me a little to the side'."

Right, the misconception is that Kirk always said "Beam me up, Scotty." But he never did. The TVH line was the closest.

I assume you posted an image.

Sorry, I'm blind so I can't see the picture, my screen reader can only read text out loud for me. Maybe if someone could describe the picture.

oops. I’m Deaf. Yeah, it’s Benedict Cumberbatcj as Sherlock Holmes saying Nope

there’s no way to identify a fan based on reaction to a quote, even a fake one.

No worries, you couldn't know. It's no secret I'm blind but I don't mention it unless there's a reason to.

I'm not sure what the picture means but the image in my head still made me laugh.

And then there are those that know all that stuff, yet still entertain the 'wrong' meme, because they think it's not important as to whether Kirk actually said that or not - that he could have said it is what counts. Much in the same way Louis XIV probably never actually said L'État, c'est moi , but in a sense it still rings true because it epitomizes his reign. About that one, I could still get worked up though, as we are still talking about historical truth here. Much less so about a man like Kirk whose existence is fictional and for entertainment purposes in the first place.

I was expecting "Beam me up, Scotty!" to finally be said aloud in the reboot movies. But noooooo.
