Sci-Fi Music Playlist

I've been putting together a playlist of music heard in various sci-fi movies and TV shows. What I mean by that is contemporary music that you'd likely hear on the radio, that the average person wouldn't necessarily know the connection. These are songs that, when I hear them, instantly bring back memories of these shows. Here's what I have so far:

Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf - ST:FC
Ooby Dooby - Roy Orbison - ST:FC
Sabotage - Beastie Boys - ST09
Faith of the Heart - Rod Stewart - ENT (Wasn't the version used, but is the one that gets played.)
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix - BSG (A cover was mostly used, but Hendrix's original is in the final episode.)
Power of Love - Huey Lewis & The News - Back to the Future
Blitzkrieg Bop - Ramones - Space: Above and Beyond (Pilot)
Voodoo Child - Rogue Traders - Doctor Who ("The Sound of Drums")
Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede - Guardians of the Galaxy (Too many to choose from in this movie!)
Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum - Apollo 13 (NOT SCI-FI!)
Raise Your Hands - Bon Jovi - Spaceballs
Dare to be Stupid - Weird Al - Transformers: The Movie

I haven't included songs like the ones used in Stargate Universe because contemporary songs were used so often in that show that they lost their connection for me. Anyone have more to add?

Carry On My Wayward Son (Kansas) - Supernatural
Life On Mars (David Bowie) - well, obviously, Life On Mars
Welcome to the Machine (Pink Floyd) - Person of Interest
Have you Ever Seen the Rain (Creedence Clearwater Revival) - Stargate SG-1's finale

I actually used to have a playlist like this, many of the songs you and I have mentioned were on them. If only I could find it... I think it might have been on a CD (gasp).

EDIT to add: Journey of the Sorcerer (Eagles) - HHGG

Got a few more to add!

Don't Bring Me Down - Electric Light Orchestra - Doctor Who ("Love & Monsters")
Dance the Night Away - Van Halen - Mission to Mars
It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) - R.E.M. - Independence Day
Play With Me - Extreme - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) - Journey - Tron Legacy

The Heavy Metal soundtrack has some great stuff. My favorites from that:

"Heavy Metal" - Sammy Hagar
"Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)" - Don Felder
"Open Arms" - Journey
"All of You" - Don Felder
"Through Being Cool" - Devo

Some of these haven't actually been used in an S/F production, but nevertheless have a personal S/F connection for me:

Speaking of Silent Running, from the Douglas Trumbull film:

"Silent Running" and "Rejoice in the Sun" by Schickele and Lampert, performed by Joan Baez.

Flash - Queen - Flash Gordon
99 Luftballons (for the Captain Kirk reference)
Sound of Silence - Simon & Garfunkle - Originally used in a non-scifi movie, but the sequence it was used in Watchmen was incredible.

All from Doctor Who:

The Chase
The Beatles "Ticket To Ride" (on screen)

The Evil of the Daleks

The Beatles "Paberback Writer"
The Seekers "Nobody Knos The Trouble I've Seen"

Revelation of the Daleks
Jimi Hendrix "Fire"
Procul Harem "A Whiter Shade of Pale"*
Carl Perkins "Blue Suede Shoes"*

Remembrance of the Daleks
The Beatles "Do Yo Want To Know A Secret"
The Beatles "A Taste Of Honey"

Yes, Daleks like pop music.

*By the phrasing of the Tardis Wikia, these may be covers

Solitary Man- Johnny Cash, Stargate: Atlantis, Vegas

We don't need another hero-Tina Turner, Mad Max 3

Flash - Queen - Flash Gordon
Can't believe I forgot that one!

Song 2 - Blur - Starship Troopers
^ This was only used in the TV ads and not in the movie, but I still connect the two.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - Beatles - 2061 (novel)
^ If you know the book, you'll understand. ;)

Flash - Queen - Flash Gordon
Can't believe I forgot that one!

I remembered it, but didn't mention it, because I believe its connection to a sci-fi film is generally well-known. Perhaps some of the Heavy Metal tunes are in the same boat, as is "We Don't Need Another Hero." It depends how you intend to draw that line, I guess.

the average person wouldn't necessarily know the connection.

^ Yeah, I guess "Flash" is in the same boat as "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr in that *everyone* knows their rather obvious connection. But I'd make an exception for Queen! :D Along similar lines, I'd add "Princes of the Universe" by Queen, made for Highlander.

Good thread idea!

I know that the line between sci-fi and fantasy and the like gets defined and redefined often. However, if we include superhero movies:

"Back In Black" - AC/DC - "Iron Man"
"Thunderstruck" - AC/DC - "Iron Man 2"

"Princes of the Universe" by Queen was written fro "Highlander" but never released as part of the official movie soundtrack. Instead it was on its own album, "A Kind of Magic"

Did Toto compose a song for Dune? They were a hot band at the time with songs like Africa.

"Princes of the Universe" -- Queen (Highlander)

Great minds think alike! :)

Wasn't "Who Wants To Live For Ever" done for Highlander as well? (it also popped up once or twice in the tv series)
