sat nav question

a friend of mine has gone to buy a sat nav for his bike, i was wondering is it really worth buying one for a bicycle like he has done?.

we do a lot of long distance cycling and while i'm more old fashoned and use maps and the like he wants to go high tech.

Personally, I wouldn't get on a bike to go somewhere if I thought I needed a GPS to get there. It would be one more thing to carry around after you park the bike.

If you have a phone with GPS... or a map, you're covered.

I can see how GPS would be useful for finding out where you are. But if cycling is done for recreation, then you'll probably enjoy determining your own route, and going where whim takes you, rather than going where the machine tells you to go.

I know a couple that have a tandem recumbrant bicycle. They have Ham radio, as well as GPS and they do long distance (state-wide) travel. If you are going off road or you are following a trail then of coarse you don't need one. But if you find yourself along highways, I can see it being handy.
