Methinks because the Nancy Drew property accidentally fell into some producers hands for free or nearly free.
Nancy Drew is still owned by Simon & Schuster, which is a part of CBS Corporation, so yeah, they own it. It's possible that Veronica Mars had overshadowed everything, so trying to bring back Nancy Drew as she is in the current books might not work.
Didn't Disney or some other kids' production team try to make a Nancy Drew movie some time ago? I seem to remember a Nancy that actually did go to college, but she wasn't as serious and responsible as she was in the books. I remember a scene with her careening around campus in her car, in a reckless way.
There was a 2007 movie with Emma Roberts as Nancy, basically acting the same way she did in the 1950's novels, and very clean cut, always eating properly, but promising not to solve a mystery while on vacation with her Dad in Los Angeles: Nancy Drew
