CBS’ big Nancy Drew mystery has been solved: Person of Interest‘s Sarah Shahi nabbed the coveted title role in the network’s contemporary take on the classic Carolyn Keene novels.

Drew, which has thus far only received a pilot order, finds the iconic crime solver — now in her thirties — putting her “uncanny observational skills” to work as a detective for the NYPD, while also navigating “the complexities of life in a modern world.”

Shahi joins a cast that also includes ER‘s Anthony Edwards (as Nancy’s dad), Graceland‘s Vanessa Ferlito (as a fellow NYPD detective) and The Good Wife‘s Felix Solis (as Nancy’s boss at the NYPD).

Does an adult version of the character really work? Isn't the appeal of the character that she's a teenage girl who's smarter than all the adults? Despite that I love the casting of Sarah Shahi.

I think they're just going for a gender-swapped Elementary, and since there isn't a lady equivalent to Holmes, they created the next best thing.

It might work.

Oh.

I think they're going to rip off Jessica Jones.

Something awful happened between Nancy's happy cartoon life as a child PI, and Nancy's life as an adult tying men to chairs and beating them until they answer very serious questions about why they're not paying their child support.

Oh? She's a cop?

"My childhood adventures of solving crime, sure would have been easier if I was allowed to blow people away like I am now. Sit the #### down or I'll make it so you can't walk anymore."

Errrr.....um....looking at that description, that's NOT Nancy Drew. That's just another cop show. Nancy wasn't a cop and wasn't an adult. So, yeah, why not just make it an original character who is just really good at her job?

Methinks because the Nancy Drew property accidentally fell into some producers hands for free or nearly free.

Uncanny observational skills. All they did was give Patrick Jane a badge, and now it's a completely different cop show for the procedural network.

Gah.

Nancy Drew was 18 and acted a few years older. If anyone here remembers the books, she was always able to travel anywhere in the world at a moment's notice, and nothing about her was very "teenagerish." Her boyfriend, if I remember correctly, was a college football player but Nancy herself wasn't in college. She was basically an idle rich girl who seemed to run into some mystery every other day and got a reputation as a detective.

The attempt that was made back in the '70s to have a "Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys" series (one week would be Nancy Drew; the next would be Hardy Boys and so on) basically flopped. Nancy Drew lasted only one season, then they canceled that part of the series and kept on with the Hardy Boys. There were a couple of crossover episodes with Nancy and her friends in a kind of competitive "frenemy" situation with the Hardy Boys (Nancy wasn't at all impressed with the guys, though her friend thought Joe was cute and a good singer - this was one of the episodes where Shaun Cassidy sang one of the songs from his first album).

I still have a few of my Nancy Drew books that I got 40+ years ago, and they're destined for the second-hand book store. I've tried Nancy Drew computer games and found them frustrating and rather pointless.

Didn't Disney or some other kids' production team try to make a Nancy Drew movie some time ago? I seem to remember a Nancy that actually did go to college, but she wasn't as serious and responsible as she was in the books. I remember a scene with her careening around campus in her car, in a reckless way.

^^ Have you seen the 30s movies with Bonita Granville? That's my favorite version of Nancy Drew.

That's my usual refrain, too: Why not original characters? Wasn't Jennifer Garner supposed to star in a series about a young Miss Marple? Maybe too-old Nancy Drew will meet too-young Miss Marple. :rommie:

Why are people surprised at this? Making pre-existing concepts fit standard formulas is what TV networks do. The WB Network even turned Tarzan into a New York City police procedural once. On the one hand, networks are always looking for new material they can base shows on, but on the other hand, they like those shows to conform to proven, successful formulas. So they're always trying to strike a balance between innovation and familiarity. We should be used to this by now.

Presumably, CBS wants the name recognition that comes with Nancy Drew, but they don't think a young-adult series about a teen detective would be successful with their target demographic. So we get a Nancy Drew "sequel" series about her adult career. Sort of Smallville in reverse.

That doesn't mean it won't sell. Setting Sherlock Holmes in the 21st century is one of the stupidest ideas of all time, yet there are two successful shows based on that premise.

Recently I watched the pilot to Dynasty.

Pamela Sue Martin, wow.

I have Tarzan the Series on a Hard drive, as a curiosity that I never thought that I would ever get around to... YOUNG Sarah Wayne Callies as Jane Porter!!!??? Oh, wait, this show is also sporting a way too young Leighton Meester as well as Xena Warrior Princess.

Oh.

I don't watch Vikings, but the guy playing Tarzan grows up to be the lead guy in Vikings.

Are we sure that this New York set Tarzan is as bad as the grapevine makes out?

21st century?

Pishaw!

There's no need to half ass it!

Catchy theme song. :rommie:

There was also a TV pilot back in the 80s or 90s in which Holmes put himself and Watson into suspended animation to save them from Bubonic Plague. It was pretty good. But that's not the same as Holmes being born a hundred years later, which completely invalidates the character.

Let's face it, if the premiere airs in September, it's going to be a hit. CBS rarely cancels their dramas.

I hope this ends up being good. Yet another cop show, disappoint. I hope at some point she quits the force and opens a PI agency. Half the fun was Nancy snooping around.
