Sane Larry's latest blog update...

Well, to me it's an event.

http://beasthouse-lm2.blogspot.com/

Particularly insightful I think. Couple of laughs too, and the commercial break pics on the top right made me chuckle. I think he should be writing for the show. I mean, Chris Chibnall over him?

Y'know what, I don't think he should be writing for the show. Why? Cos TV would cramp his style too much. Lawrence on TV just wouldn't be sufficiently Lawrence-ish; it'd be de-fanged.

He *should* be writing proper bloody original novels with all the depth of craziness we're used to, and sweeping the Hugos and Nebulas...

That arrogant jerk again? Jeeze.

(Yes, Lawrence, Moffat named the geeky boyfriend in "Blink" Lawrence just to make fun of you.)

Remind me again. Why should anyone care about the ravings of a socially maladjusted loser with a massive chip on his shoulder who's never done anything with his life beyond writing some Doctor Who books and spin-off books that have been read by a couple of thousand people?

The man's like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory -- just replace success in physics with success in media tie-in novel writing. Which, there's nothing dishonorable about that, but it's kind of absurd to act as though you're inherently smarter and so much better than other people just because you don't like modern TV shows and wrote some novels.

Well hang on, he's just a man with some expertise in the area posting his opinions. Personally, I find a lot of what he has to say interesting and insightful, and often very amusing. Sadly we seem to have another case of people in this forum insulting people they disagree with.

"Insulting"? I find a lot of what people in this forum have to say interesting and insightful, and often very amusing.

I fail to see how your first sentence joins up with the second there.
Not very elegantly, I'll grant you that.

What I was trying to demonstrate is that "insulting people he disagrees with" seems to be Lawrence Miles' M.O. Maybe not his only trick, but obviously that's something he seems to really enjoy. He's a rabble-rouser.

Which makes it all the more ironic when you complain against people who are basically doing the same thing against him, albeit in a much less aggressive fashion. What you're willing to accept from someone you agree with, you're refusing from those you don't.

Now you're supposed to say "Oh, but Lawrence Miles does it with talent, wit and panache", which is why I preemptively stated that I see the same qualities in the people who post in this forum.

Sorry, but his observations about the show and CGI heavy movies I read with some interest (I didn't agree) but when he starts to talk about how he was insulted by Moffat and make it sound like he was so hard done by I closed the page. Why make things personal?

I'd refrain from insulting him, except the man can't stop himself from insulting anybody with different tastes from his, or from insulting the producers of Doctor Who. All of his blog posts are about how he's ever-so-much more clever than anybody who enjoys Doctor Who and how much of a jerk Steven Moffat is.

Lawrence Miles has experience in writing television episodes of Doctor Who?

This is news to me. And the rest of reality.

He has experience with writing Who novels, yes.

Writing a successful TV series that will pull in longstanding fans AND family audiences as well? Not so much.

His "attempt" at writing a TV script (The Book of the World) shows the problem. He's full of big, mad ideas that can easily fill a novel but are 1) pretty much unfilmable without a movie budget, 2) utterly impenetrable to a casual audience and 3) rely on the plot to distract you from the utter blandness of any of the characters other than the Big Fella himself.

Seemed like a promising enough post about how CGI can often be seen as the most important part of a film rather than the story by film-makers.

Sadly though it quickly degenerated into a personal attack on Moffat and fans of the more recent series of Doctor Who. Still not sure why anyone should give a crap about what Miles thinks, given his apparent disdain towards anyone with a different opinion.
