"Samurai Girl" 9/5 to 9/7 (ABC Family) - Discussion

Anyone going to watch this? It's based on a series of novels I've never heard of (because I'm not in their demographic). But on the official site it had a poll for why you were looking forward to the most, and one option was "the hotties," so I guess they're aware of their appeal.

Is this miniseries a backdoor pilot of it's successful?

Nineteen-year-old girl named Heaven discovers that the well-to-do businessman who adopted her as an infant is actually the head of Yakuza, the Japanese mafia responsible for murdering her brother. Upon leaving her family Heaven decides to become a samurai with the help of her new American friends, and grows determined to take down her father's empire. This series is based on the popular novels for young people.

I don't know when the Family Channel in Canada is showing it, but I'll be watching. Some of these Family/Disney-esque movies can be pretty good and this one looks like something I'll enjoy.

After watching the preview video, I have to say Japan must finally do something about ninjas randomly killing everyone at weddings, on subways, and in the 18th century. It's gone too far.

I gave up on it after a few minutes. The only reason I was curious was that the actress looked kinda pretty, but after seeing more of her, she was less impressive than I thought, and didn't seem like much of an actress. Plus I couldn't get why a Japanese girl would be named "Heaven" by her Japanese parents. Well, I think that in the opening scene, her brother called her Ten-chan, and ten is the Japanese word for heaven, with -chan being an affectionate/familiar suffix. But if her name was really Ten, it was annoying for her own family members to keep calling her "Heaven" in English -- kind of like if people were to go around calling me "Anointed-One-Bearer" instead of Christopher.

Also it was weird to have an opening scene that was apparently set in Japan, with the characters talking about how they'd finally get to see America, and yet both were speaking English in flawless American accents and the donut box had an English label on it. Sure, there are lots of English brand names in use in Japan, but one would expect the name to be printed in katakana as well as romaji.

I've watched both nights and while it's not the best mini-series in the world it's been worth watching. I've got it set to record again tonight and will watch it before bed.

Even though I'm not Japanese and don't live in Japan, I'm throwing my name into the hat for the next prime minister elections. My platform: Cheap gas, cheap milk, and no ninjas coming out of nowhere and randomly killing your friends and family!

Might be better to promise even more ninjas, because under the Inverse Ninja Rule, the more ninjas there are, the easier they are to beat.

My brother and I watched Part 3 tonight and MST3K'd it the whole time. Random ninjas attacking out of nowhere, the perfectly-tailored-yet-sexy ninja outfit that Heaven had, and of course, she could use The Force....

Funny, you should mention that. In the Middleman panel at DragonCon, they mentioned the fact that the ABCFamily brass would like to move away from the "family" aspect of the name. They were forced to incorporate it when they bought the Family channel. They want shows like The Middleman, KyleXY, Samurai Girl, and Secret Life of An American Teenage to broaden their viewership.
