Russian Hydroelectric Dam Goes "FFFFT POP"

Russian officials have warned it is unlikely any of the 64 workers trapped within Russia's largest hydro-electric power plant after a blast will survive.
Twelve people are already confirmed dead after the explosion at the Sayano-Shushenskaya power plant in Siberia.
Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu said groups of divers were searching for survivors in the flooded turbine hall.
The blast's cause is unknown but reports said investigators believed a transformer exploded during repairs.

Looking at the videos and pictures I can only imagine that they had a series of failures all at once. Oil filled output transformers can generate explosive gas if not kept in good repair, and large industrial generators are often cooled by hydrogen. I suspect an explosion in one touched off an explosion in the other... that is if it was indeed an accident.

70 people gone in one stroke... yikes!

Only two people have been saved, and a lot are still missing. Hopefully, at least some will be found alive, despite the official pessimism.

here are some more pics. In a couple of them you can see people and really get a sense of the scale of the thing.

Hopefully more people will be found, but it doesn't look good.

When Chernobyl exploded back in 1986 35 workers died within a month... those were men and women on duty that night... and of course the fire crew so that was roughly a hundred men.... I'm not counting the "liquidator" crews or the army crews brought in to deal with the aftermath.

:( I feel bad for them, they like their big machines. Problem is when a big machine dies it makes a big mess.

^Yeah, I noticed and have already posted some 'shops' in the bomb thread :rommie:

And added the RSS-feed to my reader ;)

Holy Toledo! That's pretty impressive-- both the dam and the destruction.
