Rupert Murdoch plans end to free news, will this affect you?

What will you do when News websites begin to charge money?

  • I will gladly pay a fee to continue reading news from my favorite website.

  • I will instead use one of the many other free news websites on the internet.

  • It doesn't affect me because all of the websites planning to do this sucked anyway.

Good luck to him, the people that trust Rupert Murdoch publications to deliver balanced reporting are probably stupid enough to pay.

I don't even read Newscorp crap for free, why would I pay for it?

Anyway, the concept is flawed even for decent news organizations. You don't give people something for free for a decade and then start charging for it. There are too many sources of free news out there and there always will be because there are other business models available, including not-for-profit, which is where the news media should be heading anyway.

Who cares, I pay my licensing fee(?) and get all the news I need from that, be it Text-TV, live TV, radio or on-line text, video, radio...
[Plus films and crime shows and music and 'rality' shows and game shows and...]
People still watch FOX?
Do they still have this comedy show... Oh Really? -or something... used to watch that, almost as good as Colbert!

So Rupert Murdoch thinks that free news sites are a “flawed” business model and is planning to start charging for access to news on any News Corporation website.
Yes, because after running an ad-driven business for a decade, with another 40 plus years for broadcast television, it makes perfect sense to change it for no discernible reason.

What will happen if one news corporation starts charging is that people will flock to the site that doesn't charge.

When you have the BBC and the Metro, what more do you need?

I saw a bit of Sky news the other day at the gym, whilst on the treadmill. They had a sudden news flash across the screen ' sky sources say...'

It was something I'd read a few minutes before on BBC News 24.

People still watch FOX?

Only those who want to laugh at idiots. Maybe 3% of their coverage is interesting, but 97% of their news and commentary is knuckle-dragging at best. But I guess the people who feel that it is actually fair and balanced are like-minded.

Newspapers fucked up 10 years ago by offering it for free. Now that the genie's out of the bottle, I'm not sure why they think they can stick it back in. I kinda hope it'll work because it's a good thing to have professional journalists.

That being said, I'm going to be a hypocrite since there are plenty of (better) sites that still offer their news for free. I have no intention of paying Rupert Murdoch anything if I can help it.

Newscorp won't go bankrupt. I could see them discontinuing internet service entirely, but probably not.
