rumor- Joe Dante On Gremlins re-boot/remake

"I hear they're going to make another one soon," the Gremlins director told us. "I can see why - it would be stupid to let that title go to waste." Just don't expect a straight sequel. "The actors from the first two are too old to do a proper sequel, so I'm sure when the new one arrives it will be a remake of the original."

Whatever the outcome, Gremlins creator Chris Columbus won't be on board. "I haven't heard about it," Columbus told Empire. "If they do the monsters with CGI, I don't know if it would be the same. They should go back and do it with puppets again, though at this point I wouldn't be interested in being involved."

After the experience of making the Loony Tunes movie Warner Bros and Dante are unlikely to ever do film together again. Dante constantly butted heads with studio execs over...well EVERYTHING... if my memory serves me right.

The Angry Video Game Nerd's review of the two Gremlin movies says it all. Part of the charm of the first one is the fact that it came across as a total surprise. People expected E.T. and got a pseudo-horror movie instead!

Going into the re-boot/remake knowing what to expect would ruin the whole thing! And what tone, exactly would they take for the movie?

Well the title Gremlins which was a previous folklore term for mysterious, mischievous creatures who damage machines should have been a clue!

I assume that surprise was because the advertising focused on Gizmo and due to Steven Spielberg being the producer?

The mogwais were created by man. They evolved. They rebelled. And they have a plan.

Actually, according to the novelization of Gremlins 2, the Mogwai were created as a genetic experiment on another planet. I kid you not.

WTF????!!!!

Going to check who wrote that. That's is so arbitrary and disconnected from anything in the movies.

EDIT - wikipeida says, so take this with grain of salt, that this origin was introduced in the novelization of the first movie written by George Gipe. This was carried over into the novelization of the second film written by David Bischoff.

The name George Gipe seemed familiar to me. It turns out he wrote the novelization for the first Back to the Future. Where he also took huge liberties with the source material. He has Marty worrying about a Nuclear War in the 80s through out the story. Talk about changing the tone completely! BTTF screenwriter Bob Gale was very unhappy with this. Resulting in him working closely with Craig Shaw Gardner on the novels for Part II and Part III.

I never read the novelization for the first movie. But I believe I read the one for Gremlins 2 before I even saw the movie. I remember wondering where they pulled that strange origin from. If I still had the novelization I would refresh my memory.

Has anyone else ever seen the VHS version of the big interruption sequence?

In this version I believe the scene jumps to a wild west setting with the gremlins dressed like bandits and the hero gunning them down.

I need to see if Youtube has this.

NEVER MIND! I found it, though I did have to dig a litttle bit.

Nothing will beat the first one, it's a classic. I also love the fact they used the Back to the Future street. Why not do a remake with CGI? We will still have the first one.

The second one was rather bad anyways.

ENOUGH with the remakes already! Just do a sequel.

Oh I forgot! Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are too old and decrepit to be in it. LOL!!:rommie:

I've always thought that there was a very easy way to bring some life back to the Gremlins franchise without ruining the satirical tone of the first two movies.

You just have to go all the way to the metaphor. The Mogwais are cute and inoffensive creatures, like children. Then something happens that make them wild, awkward, rude and obnoxious, like adolescents.

If I were in charge, I'd introduce a third stage where gremlins turn into boring and anal creatures, like adults.

Anyone else think the Gremling that got turned into a female in the second one was kind-of hot? Just me? Ok. Nevermind.

If they're going to "remake" this movie, I DEMAND that they use animatronics/puppets and not CG for the Mogwais/Gremlins. I mean, watch the original(s) and you don't believe for a minute that those are puppets made out of latex.

I liked the second one....I'm surprised they didn't do anything else with the franchise after it came out, but I don't think they should do a remake. What would be the point? But as has been said, when has that stopped Hollywood before? I mean, how many remakes come out per year?

I'd say that sounds more like rude emo late teens.
