Roy E. Disney Passes Away At 79

More sad news out of Hollywood today. Roy E. Disney, who was one of the driving forces of the Walt Disney Studios Renaissance back in the early 90s (leading to some of my favourite films since childhood) has died.

From The New York Times:

Roy E. Disney, the nephew of Walt Disney who helped revitalize the Walt Disney Studio’s famed animation division and at times publicly feuded with top executives at the company, died on Wednesday at Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif., following a year-long battle with stomach cancer, according to spokeswoman from the company. He was 79.

Mr. Disney served as a director emeritus and consultant to the company until his death. From 1984-2003, he held the post of vice chairman of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company and chairman of the studio’s animation department. He resigned in 2003 citing “serious differences of opinion about the direction and style of management” subsequently helped lead an investor uprising that culminated with the departure of Michael Eisner as chief executive and chairman.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Disney.

Pretty sad news. Even sadder is I think that's the end of the Disney family connection to the studio. It's interesting (and a bit ironic) that he died around the same time the studio's first traditional-style animated feature in several years was released -- the same sort of film he championed when the renaissance began 20 years ago.

Rest in peace, Mr. Disney. You oversaw some terrific moments in Disney's history.

He did good-and he got Eisner out when his time had passed. May he rest in a place where bluebirds come and circle his head every time he sings...

RIP dear sir, you have earned a soft cloud and palm fronds waved by chubby cherubs.

We thank you for all the wonderful memories.

Truly a shame, but I'm glad he lived to see the new management — particularly John Lassetter — start to turn things around in the animation division.

Very sad news. He thought tooth and nail to make Walt Disney a good production company once again. Like biggles, I'm glad he lived long enough to see the regiment change for the better.

Rest in peace, Roy.

Yes, his mental powers were truly prodigious. That's how you know someone's a visionary--when they think about it very hard.

Sorry. Couldn't resist... :p

Thank you very much sir, for all your hard work. Your work will live on forever. May you rest in peace.
