Routh on dark Superman and Brainiac

I already liked the guy, now I like him even more

IESB: A lot of people don't think Superman can be that dark, or that you could make such a dark Superman film.

BR: I don't know, I don't think the character necessarily has to be darker, I think he is kind of dark in a sense, emotional dark, in Superman Returns, and the movie as a whole was slightly dark, they could have had more prowess in it I suppose, and I think that's one thing that can be done in the sequel, so I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily. You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it. But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not his nature. And that's now what people what to see. Like Brainiac or something like that, a situation when the villain is...

IESB: Would that be a good, if you had a choice is that the villain you'd like to see in the next Superman?

BR: I think it would certainly be interesting, I think there are a lot of things you could do with Brainiac. He's been given a lot of power and a lot of different abilities over the years in the comics, as far as I understand. I know that DC is working on a Brainiac storyline that they are excited about and I think combining the two and have that flow between the comics and the movie would be a nice thing. I honestly think there are a lot of interesting things you can do with Brainiac. Controlling people, controlling technology, a lot of cool things.

The appeal of Superman is his eternal optimism in peacetime as well as in the face of great adversity and oppression.

I say keep him "uncynical" as he always has been, because look what happened to Superman when they went "dark" on him in Superman III? :borg:

Well, for one thing, he wore colors as dark as the ones they made Routh wear in Superman Returns (not Routh's fault, obviously)...

Always nice to see that an actor has involved himself in the characters' mythos to the extent that they can cite villains that have never been on film.

Creditorly yours, the Rent Woman

He's probably been yelled at by a lot of people, that after 3 years of trial and error, Brandon, like Bill Murray's character from Groundhog day, can respond to such questions perfectly.

He gets that Superman shouldn't be dark and brooding and he thinks Brainiac would be a good villain for the next movie?

Dammit, WB, you can reboot everything else if you like, but bring this man back!

I don't care what he says...he is the face of Superman Returns, and that is the face of failure.

Reboot with somebody who looks like Alex Ross painted him.

Brandon is at least 20 years too young to be that guy. He's also not the voice of the heart of Superman, he's just a mouthpiece that dances like a monkey for other crazy fuckers who made abortions like the last movie. When bad things happen to good people?

I imagine 5 years from now, that he will be penniless. In his last opportunity to stay afloat affording bread and gin, Brandon begins a series of one man theatre in the round improv productions of "Superman in the Park" where he can try to make up for going along with Brian Syngers wheelborrow full of crazy... Of course it might be difficult to tell Brandon apart fom the other barely hygenic homelss people spewing communist dogma and begging for change.

Routh was pretty much the only good thing about returns...too bad he was barely in the movie. He just kind of floated there in his brown plastic cape for most of the movie.

He barely had more to say than Sabertooth in X-Men. CR had his fair share of crap Superman movies, but that doesn't mean they have to swap out the actor right away. Just make a better movie next time, that's all.

Wow. What an accurate prediction! For a working film actor, yeah, he doesn't get as much work as Tom Hanks or Philip Seymour Hoffman or Samuel L. Jackson, but he's been working steadily, just had a film released on Halloween, and has seven more projects in various stages of production. I hardly think he'll be penniless in five years, and even if he comes anywhere near there, the royalties from HBO's continual loop of Superman Returns (which, I swear to God, they show more than some of their original series!) and convention appearances should be enough to keep him afloat for the rest of his life. I mean, look at Lou Ferrigno.

I don't understand the personal hate toward Brandon Routh. So Superman didn't send him into leading man territory. He's in a movie that just came out (Zack and Miri), and unless he snorts all his savings up his nose, it's not like he's making $10 an hour for the acting gigs he's getting. He's making a pretty damn good living. Even if his career ended today, I'm sure he's made out pretty well with the million bucks he got for Superman.

He has to be careful with his money though or he might end up like the Jackson 5. But Routh definitely has the potential to be the best actor around in a few years time if only he changes that damn agent of his! I mean from Superman to a bit part in Zack and Miri? Not taking off as it should be.

Right. Because wishing financial ruin upon an actor simply because he participated in a genre movie you found to be "off" is hell of classy.

Relax, guys. It's just Guy "Gardener" being "funny." Nothing to see here, move along...

I find it kind of funny that the ad for Valkyrie running on the right of the screen says "from the director of The Usual Suspects and X-Men" Even the ad people don't like SR.

Anyway, they really should let Superman do 'what no one else can' more in the next movie and do less moping around in the bushes of his ex-girlfriend's house.

Interesting...was fan of Brandon in Superman Returns and it seems like he understands something of what the audience and fandom requires out of a Superman movie as well as the character its self. By the way, he has a part in Zack and Miri Make a Porno!! Brainiac is my choice for a villan since we haven't seen him on the big screen yet!
