"Rose" 1X01 discussion (rewatch)

Is any excited about the relaunch of "Doctor Who"? It's been 9 years since we saw Paul McGann in that TV movie they made on FOX.

I don't know if i'll like the new guy. Ears are bit too much I hope he sticks around for a few seasons if this relaunch is successful.

When Rose Tyler meets a mysterious stranger called the Doctor, her life will never be the same again. Soon she realises that her mum, her boyfriend and the whole of Earth are in danger. The only hope for salvation lies inside a strange blue box.

PS- Joking aside. Today marks the 15th anniversary of the relaunch of the series. I got into it in when PBS started airing Tennants first season. IMO the series lost steam after Matt Smith left.

I struggled to finish Capaldi's first season. Haven't finished his 2nd and lost interest in his third season.

The large feedback from Jodie's tenure is that she would do better with better writers and I agree. Her first season was forgettable with her most recent season being just a tiny notch better.

I'm even scared to peek at how bad "Orphan 55" was


Anyways lets discuss how felt about "Rose" and the relaunch of the series with this first episode in a new era.

The "Rose" rewatch overloaded Gallifrey Base's servers and, as I type this, that site is down.

Same as what happened in 2005, as I recall, with its predecessor site.

Wait. It occurs to me they may have done that deliberately as a joke.

One thing I always liked about RTD episodes is how they were able to cram so much stuff into 45-50 minutes. One of my favorite episodes was always Gridlock.

He basically said in an interview "We don't have time to explain that. We're going at break neck speeds! Try to keep up!"

I enjoyed rewatching the episode. It still holds up today.

There's good and bad in Rose and I don't think my opinion has changed too much in the intervening 15 years.

Pros: The in your face exuberance, Eccleston and Piper's chemistry (the slight hint of snark is so much preferable to the Tennant/Piper schoolgirlish love-in to come), the turn of the Earth speech, Autons! Jacqui is funnier than I remember and less annoying.

Cons: The effects are a trifle ropey, understandtable really, plastic Mickey is ridiculous, how could Rose not notice? Clive's death is really harsh but I guess he is vindicated seconds before death. I had forgoten just how intrusive the music was back then. Music can work really well in establishing mood but I always baulk at being told how to feel by Gold's soundtrack ALL THE TIME, would rather it was the script/performances that did that.

I remember after it first aired. It was essentially my first exposure to Doctor Who, but my uncle, a life long Who fan phoned me up and said "well, wasn't that amazing?!" My response was a reserved "it was acceptable." Granted, over the course of the next thirteen weeks I became quickly enthralled with the show to the point that I'm now a Doctor Who fan of some scale, and now when I look back on Rose, though I still wouldn't gush and call it amazing, I agree has a certain charm to it and was a good way to relaunch Doctor Who for a new era.

I love Rose. As an introduction to Doctor Who, it is every bit the equal to An Unearthly Child and then some. I only wish it had been longer, so some of it wouldn't rushed, and the effects have indeed aged poorly, but that doesn't matter as much. Its an awesome new chapter and, for me, my capital first experience on DW.

I think that was the idea? That she didn't notice him half the time.
