Romulus status (SPOILERS)

So, in the 25 years b/w the Kelvin's incident and Vulcan's incident, wouldn't Nero have had time to go and deal with the star which will supernova in the future. (I know he was supposed to be in Rura Penthe and what not, but still) Was a comment made in the movie to the contrary?

Would make sense - but I don't think Nero was the smartest Romulan, or the clearest-thinking.

How did the Romulans not know well in advance their star was going to nova? There must have been signs. Or else how could Spock have known?

I dont think it was the Romulan star that went nova. I didnt read Countdown, but from what others have told me it was a distant star that had some bizarre non-normal things happening with it

If my Countdown recollections are correct, they knew - it's just that a) the Senate was apparently too slow in its response, and b) Hobus went boom before it was supposed to.

Oh. Well then...never mind. :)

Yeah, it was a distant star that went nova. But for some reason the supernova was powerful enough to destroy THE WHOLE GALAXY!

I would have preferred if they kept their target small (just Romulus) and not the ENTIRE galaxy, but what the heck... The science would be cleaner, but anybody could explain it away. Here's a topic I had started on Supernovae, if relevant:

Still, back to my point, I don't see why one HAS to assume Romulus or anybody will be in danger. I think Nero had time to do it all, save Romulus and destroy Vulcan, although that is shear speculation...

Even if Nero didn't do it, Old Spock would probably take it upon himself to fix the problem before the star exploded.

But what Nero said was that he not only wanted to save Romulus. He wanted to make it great. Destroying Vulcan and the Federation was "the only way it would truly be saved."

Status of Romulus, lessee...

Old continuity: Still kablooey.
New Continuity: Not yet fragged.

when the Narada appeared next to the Kelvin, was it next to the Hobus star?

That's a good/logical point - 'cause you'd imagine the blackhole would take you to the same point in space, right? But then wtf was the Kelvin doing in what was, presumably, Romulan space?

To stop the Hobus Star Nero would have needed red matter which he didn't have in those 25 years. When he acquired Spock and the Red Matter he went straight for Vulcan.
Anyone with half a brain of course would have gone and dealt with the Hobus star which is why i'm under the assumption that Romulans have only quarter brains.

To all those asking did it exit at the Hobus Star, well there's no reason to believe it did, blackholes traversing time might also traverse space like a wormhole.

yeah, I've wondered the same. I suppose at that time, if it was sufficiently distant, it might have been unclaimed space and not part of Romulan territory.

There's a deleted scene suggesting that, after it was crippled by the Kelvin, the Narada was taken into custody by the Klingons and its crew sent to the prison planet. Eventually, they escaped in time to get Spock--the 47 Klingon birds of prey lost might be connected to this--and his supply of red matter.
