I've tried to tell myself that same thing numerous times. Still looks like an over-grown escape pod or an obese jellyfish.

The render and texturing are, however, spectacular.

Good eye! Its shape is based on a squid.

When your power source uses deuterium, carrying plenty of it is your biggest concern.

I have this vision of a redshirt running in and yelling "Cabbage crates over the briney!"

you can have a lot of fun with a cucumber :P

also, that doesn't look like any kind of cabbage i've ever eaten :D

Hey, in Masao's defense, this is, to my knowledge, the earliest attempt at a Romulan vessel of this era, and one that even had it's interior thought out. This alone has earned my respect for all of the Starfleet Museum designs.

And not only that, but the Cabbage class is a very original design, an attempt to make Romulan vessels from the 22nd century way different from much later designs, unlike what Eaves' design, which as much as I like, does admittedly look like it would have been better off as a design introduced in Nemesis along with the Norexan, as opposed to being a design of the mid 22nd century, but what is done is done.

The Cabbage and her brethren also lend themselves off well as a starting point for Romulan vessels from even earlier eras. The majority of which definitely shouldn't resemble Birds of Prey, even less so the further back in time we go.

Edit: Read the post above not this one. Unless you want to know why it is here that is.

I just realized that the post above, which I though was lost when I was automatically logged out when I posted it, was, well posted. I didn't see it, because I didn't see that my message made a second page. That is probably partly because I was so angry due to believing that the post I had typed was apparently deleted :scream:, so I just wanted to quickly type it up again, and move on. I don't know how to delete this post, and I can't ignore my mistake, so I have to acknowledge and explain it's origin.

In Masao's defense, to my knowledge the Cabbage and her brethren was the first attempt to design Romulan vessels from that era. On top of that, even the interiors were sort of fleshed out, which alone earns my respect.

And as much as I like Eaves' design, I have to admit that the Cabbage class and company are a far more original attempt, and Eaves' Bird of Prey looks like it would have been better off introduced in Nemesis, as opposed to being depicted as a predecessor to the Bird of Prey of the 23rd century, but what's done is done.

Only thing I don't like about the design is the shape of the pods. It reeks of designing in a 2d vacuum and is wholly inconsistent with the design language of the rest of the ship.

I don't expect everyone to like my designs. That's life. So, thanks to all the defenders, and to the retractors, too, for weighing in. I feel like Ryan Church!

I have to address this comment, though. I did some of the original design work in 3d. In modeling clay and toothpicks. Trilateral symmetry is not something that would naturally arise from a 2D design process. The trilateral symmetry of the pods is a natural reduction from the hexalateral symmetry of the front of the ship.
