Romulan "Bird of Prey" canon?

Of course, Lt. Styles made a remark about Roman spacecraft being identifiable because "they'll be painted like a giant bird of prey" in "Balance of Terror", but there never was an official nomenclature attached to that class of Romulan ship, was there?

The ships themselves, as seen in the non-remastered "Balance of Terror" and the "Deadly Years" were never specifically given a spaceship call name, were they?

IIRC (and I could be wrong about all this), the term "Romulan Bird of Prey" was a marketing name used to sell the AMT model kits.

If you mean referring to it as a destroyer or a cruiser, then no. it's called a flagship and is painted a certain way, but according to Stiles all Romulan ships would be painted in such a fashion.

I believe Stiles' comments were the only time any kind of ship type, or name, or class was ever given to that kind of ship. What the Romulans call it, we have no idea. Not canonically, anyway (the novels give its class name as Vas Hatham).

Certainly there are zero dialogue references to "Bird of Prey" in this context. OTOH, there's that series of images from VOY "The Voyager Conspiracy" with rather nonsensical labels, one of them being BIRD-OF-PREY for the bad likeness of the TOS ship found in the old Encyclopedia...

The old style Romulan ships must have had the wings and feathers under their girth just like the one that fought Kirk at the neutral zone in Balance of Terror!

Might be bird paint is reserved for wartime. ENT would be prewar, "BoT" would be a failed attempt at making war, and all the rest we see would be peacetime. Certain Romulan designs just make things easy for the paint crews by featuring raised patterns...
