My girlfriend and I just watched The Proposal and it had all the usual things we have to see in a romantic comedy.
I mean on top of the thing where someone has to pretend to be someone they're not for some reason, I've noticed a couple of other weird things most romcoms do.

1) They have to have a Starbucks near the beginning where the main character generally gets a coffee with an unwieldy name like a low-fat soy milk decaf latte. This is somehow amusing.

2) Apple products.

3) I'm not saying this in a PETA way or because I have dogs, but they seem to have to have his or her pet get into some sort of predicament that will cause embarrassment for one of them and possible death for the pet. That gets old.

Anyway, that's just my little thing. I wouldn't even call it a rant as these movies are okay....just a bit of fun and my girlfriend likes them.

Yeah, but most of Cary Grant's movies have another thing going on that these modern, churned out vehicles for a selection of female stars don't: They're good.

(Oh, and I don't have House for an avatar, just the other character Hugh Laurie was born to play)

I've watched plenty. I just put the whole Aniston/Lopez/Bullock (sometimes)/Garner/Heigl/Parker/Hudson-oeuvre in the same box as Direct-to-DVD action movies with people like Wesley Snipes or Dolph Lundgren. They're just churned out with generic plots with little creativity or imagination.

For some reason, some woman who looks like one of the actresses mentioned above has such massive, glaring personality flaws that she can't find a boyfriend. Somehow this is portrayed as being not her fault. Hilarity ensues. (Well, not actual hilarity. What's the opposite of hilarity ?)

Oh, and The Proposal ? I propose Ryan Reynolds files a sexual harassment complaint, gets Sandra Bullock fired and takes her job. That's a much more interesting movie.

I like Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock so much I actually made it through the Proposal.

I always like movies where the guy and the girl don't end up together at the end of the movie (All the Real Girls, The Terminal, etc.) so I feel better about myself.

I'd rather watch a romantic comedy than a zombie movie. There are too many of those too. At least watching the romantic comedy keeps my girlfriend happy.

Slightly off-topic, but Groundhog Day is the best romantic comedy.

I can't think of one romantic comedy that I can stand. They're almost universally awful.

To be fair, I haven't seen any of the Cary Grant era ones and since he always kicks ass those might be good.

That's true. But I have to mention it every time the topic of romantic comedies comes up, because it's the only one I really like. There's also As Good As it Gets, but once again, there's a lot more going on there than just the romance.

He was only her secretary; her getting fired wouldn't have gotten him anyway near where he wanted to be.

I very much enjoyed the first half of that movie; they were pretty funny sniping at each other. But then they started warming up to each other, and I turned it off after hour mark or so, as it stopped being at all amusing and was clearly only going to get worse.
