Go on, laugh as you will, but I love the ol' "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger" '50's tv series.
There. I saids it!
I loves it even with the vertical finned rocket ships that, somehow, have horizontally oriented sets in 'em. Planets, moon, comets? ah, why bother with that finickity accuracy terminology thingie? It's all in SPACE, right?
There is nothing at all creepy or weird about a 10 year old boy running off to dangerous interplanetary hot spots with a couple of older guys named Rocky and Winky. Perfectly normal. "Sides, there's a grandfathery old guy to keep an eye on everyone and a hot blonde in a skirt & tights to laugh at when she does girlie things. She even wears a cape. All the time. seriously.
Truthfully, despite the cultural oddities of it's time and budget, I really do enjoy the ol' fashioned Space Opera, rocketships and space guns, funny names and tights style of SF. At least it's fun.
And there's Patsy Parsons as "Cleolanta"--just the most charming evil Bad-Girl in black tights sort of villainess. Not to mention the very thinly veiled political commentary (more or less, militaristic bullies are bad while democracy and freedom lovin' folks in tight clothes are good).
The show was about a decade before my time, so I did not grow up watching it. I only discovered it fairly recently on DVD. I can't even blame this one on childhood fuzzies. Nope. I just plain likes to watch the thing.
Though...I dunno. "Winky?" Winky? Really? Damn man, we named the DOG Winky...
