Robert Picardo as director

Mr.Mork

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
Just watched "One Small Step" a few days ago and was surprised to see that Robert Picardo directed that episode. Was one of my favorites and I thought that it showed Jeri Ryan's range as an actress. I don't keep up with directors of each episode, but this one surprised me. How many other episodes of Voyager has he directed? Good actor, but I think he's a better director. No offence meant by that statement.

Those are the only two he directed.

He also co-wrote the story for "LIFE LINE", which makes him only the second STAR TREK actor... after Walter Koenig wrote "THE INFINITE VULCAN" for The Animated Series... to do so.

And he's the only one to act, direct, AND have a writing/story credit in the franchise.

It is strange that Robert Picardo didn't offer his services more often as director, like his colleagues,McNeill (as director then EP) and Dawson (as director then producer, like in Cold Case) have done in other shows. I mean, I know that he like acting but getting a job, is complicate even when you are known as being a good actor and popular one, while as a director, it seems easier to find a show ou several and to direct some episodes, especially if you manage to work a lot in this domain,to the point of having made a reputation. What doesn't avoid you to play sometimes, of course.

Rather than it being a case of Picardo not OFFERING his services as director more, maybe he simply wasn't as strong in the director role as McNeill and Dawson so the opportunity wasn't offered to him as much. I'd imagine there's a queue round the block of people lining up to direct an episode of Star Trek so the producers wouldn't have been short of options.

Like with most things there are people with more of an aptitude for a particular job than others.

What I wanted to say is that Picardo is someone who has a lot of potential in different domains (acting, directing and even writing -> he helped to write about his character so much he knew his character on Voyager) and it seems a waste of talent to have only focused on acting when he could have been more active during
these last decades.
Sad that a such talented man is forced to wait an acting propositions* and let's be honest, there aren't a lot (even if he surely receives more of them than some of these former colleagues) and invitations to attend ST conventions & cruises, even if they happen every years.

* hence perhaps his excitement at the idea of resuming his role of the Doctor in S2 of ST: Picard, after to have been in The Orville for 2 episodes.
