To all, who live in LA or near LA.

Robert Beltran directs a great group of actors to perform the play.
The play open this Friday at CASA 0101 Theater and will run till Nov 16.

Two nice pics.

RB about the play:
Robert Beltran said, "Our production of JULIUS CAESAR will be a non-traditional, non-gender specific, nor time specific rendition. It will be a symbiotic melding of Ancient Rome with contemporary culture that speaks to both. The production will be a surreal, nightmarish evocation of Ancient Rome, which serves as an abstract metaphor for our own society. My goal is to illuminate and be at the service of the play and not to bring attention to concepts or tricks. The play speaks to great ideals our own country was founded upon, which have eroded and declined over the years. William Shakespeare wrote his play as a cautionary tale for his own country, with Julius Caesar's dictatorship serving as the centerpiece for the degradation of Republican ideals at that time in 44 BC, when the play is set [....]

True! For over 500 years, Billy Shakes' works have proven their versatility. And Robert Beltran is showing his. I'm quite fond of Shakespeare, but I don't feel that anyone's adapted it for modern audiences quite the way that Kenneth Branagh did. For example, his Henry V is quite exceptional. Same thing with his Much Ado About Nothing (featuring an exceptionally beautiful, pre-Hollywoodified Kate Beckinsale). I hope Beltran finds equal success ...

Non-traditional, surreal, nightmarish, symbiotic melding, abstract metaphor. He makes it sound like the damn thing is going to be all over the place, like some bizarre, esoterically symbolic representation that leaves you wondering WTF you just saw & why you bothered

If they can set Richard III in the 1930s with tanks and Fascist trapping then why the hell not?

Believe me, I've seen more... fanciful... interpretations of the Bard's work. The play is over 400 years old, so variation and reinterpretation is to be expected, and Shakespeare's work seems to invite/dare artists to experiment with the material more than many other writers' work.

With that said, I believe Beltran has a stage reputation of being not just a commited performer, but a guy with clear vision and a love of new material. And to me that's a lot more reassuring than, say, an art student who's pretentious for art's sake and not that concerned about content (in other words, a poseur).
