River Song and the Doctor

So I am on my daily 40 minutes Doctor Who work break and am watching Silence in the Library. I am up to the point where the Doctor meets River Song for the first time. She thumbs through her diary, looking for shared memories. She obviously knows Ten.

Apparently, it's not necessary for her to ever have met Ten as long as Tennant was still with us. She could meet Eleven (Oh, it's weird typing that out!) which maybe would be her first time meeting the Doctor. Couple more times Eleven and then maybe a few throw-away lines of how she met up with Ten intermittendly, without the audience ever really witnessing it.

But then, I really like the idea of actually seeing how she meets Ten for the first time but him already knowing her. (That would of course imply seeing Tennant again, I may be biased.) Yet I also feel like there are many more possibilities of what could happen which I am just not seeing. This is where you come in! How do you think it'll play out? Some grand ideas I am missing? Or maybe some predicitions?

It might be interesting if the way River met Ten for the first time was in the course of a multi-Doctor story. :)

Suppose that she and Eleven are traveling. And, look! There's Ten! And Eleven goes, "Oh, sodding bloody grife, I shouldn't be here," and that's when River meets Ten for the first time.

The interesting thing about her is that she obviously knew multiple versions of the Doctor, but not in the proper order. Also, I wonder if she even knows/remembers (for whatever reason) which Doctor she had certain adventures with. I also wonder how long in her life she has actually known the Doctor. I got the impression that she wasn't a normal companion, but more like someone the Doctor would occasionally visit and take on a trip or two, and it seems pretty obvious to me that he'll be doing it for quite a while.

Obviously, this story would be easier to tell if Tennant was still around and we could actually see them meet for the "first" time.

Her "judging by the face, I'd say sometime in the early years" comment is also interesting because it implies that she met Ten early into her relationship (but not necessarily first). This is one story I am really interested in seeing unfold.

In all honesty, I'd rather it be left as a mystery. In fact, I'd rather have River Song remain, for the most part, a mystery in the Doctor's life.

Agreed!
Which also makes me wonder whether she will already know Eleven when she meets him. Which then wouldn't be early years for her again. Or maybe in a later episode it is?
Time travelers' lives really are complicated.

Edited because ITL chickened out and deleted his post.

And people are saying that Tennant could always be brought back as 10.2. Who'd be interested in that when there's River Song to meet!

Yeah, I got all confuddled with the Timey-Wimey and messed it up. Although, upon further thought, I may have had a point after all...or not.

:D

Confuddled with the timey-wimey ... remind me to not make you a companion as soons as I have figured out how to grow myself a TARDIS!

You did kinda have a point, though. Not meeting of Ten required. :) (As long as I don't have a say, that is.)

^ I agree with that, meeting Ten again is not required. The fact he was there was proof to her that he was The Doctor. She may have assumed he was the next incarnation (of the one she knows), not an earlier one. Maybe that's why she calls him Pretty Boy.

No reason at all that she couldn't have met Ten (properly) between The Waters of Mars and The End of Time (Part 1).

Exactly since we know the Doctor took the long-way 'round, married Queen Bess, saved Sarah Jane from the Trickster, and a great other things. However, I still say it's a meeting best left to our imaginations and never shown on screen; it's another mystery surrounding the Doctor.

The problem I have is that River Song claimed to have been familiar with the Tenth Doctor as an older person, since she says something like "younger than usual." Though I suppose she could have run into him during a multi-Doctor special and he was temporarily aged, like the Fifth in Time Crash.

Also, it can be intrepreted even in the Library story that River does meet other incarnations of the Doctor aside from the Tenth, since she was familiar with regneration.

She knew the tenth Doctor when he had older eyes (that was how I interpreted the line about the eyes). I wonder if the tenth Doctor might not have gone and looked up River during his final hours, when he hooked up Jack, saved Luke, and saw Rose. He was dying, his eyes were old and sad, and that's when she saw him with the old eyes.

I too interpreted the line in the same manner. I thought perhaps Ten meet River Song in between specials after Donna's mindwipe, when he was adrift, feeling alone, and still smarting.

That is interesting. It would also explain why River had such a strong reaction when she found out who Donna was.

I'm not saying I need to see their first meeting, but I'd kind of like a small explanation about "when" it happened.
