River piloting the TARDIS

When River pilots the tardis, which causes the destruction of the universe, is anyone else reminded of Voyager's "Future's End" where 20th century billionaire Henry Starling pilots Captain Braxton's 29th century time ship to the future and nearly destroys the star system because Starling doesn't completely understand piloting the time ship , at least until Voyager destroys the time ship with photon torpedoes.

I also thought of TNG’s “All Good things” too with life in the galaxy in jeopardy of being wiped out by anti-time and the events being reset by the end of the episode with only Picard knowing what entirely happened. I assume sometime in Series 6 we learn when River Song first encounters the doctor and he shows her how to pilot the TARDIS. I mentioned “Future’s End” since I get the opinion time travel ships have their quirks and idiosyncrasies that only an experienced pilot and operator could fully understand. The TARDIS has shown a few quirks of it's own over the course of old and nuWho.

No, for a couple of reasons. One, I gave up on Voyager pretty early on. :) And two, River does know how to pilot the TARDIS, but some outside force was controlling it, so it was not pilot error in this case. The same thing would have happened if the Doctor had been piloting it.

Quite a few companions have piloted the TARDIS over the years, some have even been quite expert at it (Adric, Nyssa, Romana, River Song). In Romana's case, she generally pilots it better than the Doctor.

The only thing in The Pandorica Opens that reminded me of Star Trek was when the Cyberman tentacles attacked Amy and the Cyberman's head said "you will be assimilated."

River is a good pilot. She knows enough to know that the only reason the doctor leaves the handbrake on is for the cool vorp vorp noise he likes so much.

She's like Troi piloting the Enterprise. Damned women drivers!

Does that stereotype exist anymore? I think it was dated even when I was young. :)

^ Nah, we just roll our eyes and remind you that statistically we are better drivers and are less likely to road rage and drag race than you crazy men are. :p

No it still exists. In fact young women are even more likely to have accidents these days. Well, more likely than older women. I think something ridiculous like 90% of accidents are still caused by men, 72% of whom then try and blame the woman involved.

At least River knows how to take the brakes off.

And while I miss parts of the dialog because of quickbritspeak, I was under the impression that driver error was not a factor in the...whatever happened.

River is a good pilot and the real reason is probably not to be revealed yet.

Less likely to road rage, except once per month perhaps, but far more likely to attempt to apply make-up whilst on the way to work, shopping, picking up the kids, etc, etc. ;)

Of course, I've never seen a woman ghost ride the whip, whereas in my town, they call it "CGC-ing."*

*May be an utter lie.

Well hey, at least we have a good excuse for our road rage. You also won't catch us shaving or reading the sports page. :p

It reminded me of "All good things" and "Future's End" with Voyager being responsible for the future disaster that happens in the same way the Tardis was.
