RIP Wes Craven

:(

I had the honour to meet and interview him many years ago. Classy gent, with a keen intelligence that belied the perception I think many non-genre fans have of horror directors. And a big influence on later directors like Raimi.

Seemed to me his output got a bit lighter throughout his career (Last House->Hills->Freddy->Scream), hopefully it was the same for his life as well.

Rob Zombie:
I only ever met Wes Craven once around 2003. I was doing a panel on horror films. I still remember something he said. An audience member asked him "what advice do you have for an aspiring writer?" Wes said, "buy a note pad and a pen and start writing."

Back in the summer of 1990 my brother and I went to California to visit some friends. one afternoon the four of us went to Universal Studios and did the tour. As we were getting off the tram we were approached by a gentlemen from the studio who wanted to know if we would be interested in attending the world premier of 'The People Under the Stairs' and afterwords have a meet and greet with Wes Craven. Unfortunately we had to turn him down as it was the same night we were scheduled to fly home. I haven't thought about that until today; I wonder what it would have been like. RIP Mr. Craven.

This made me so sad. He seemed like such a quiet down-to-earth person, and I hadn't even heard that he was sick.

When I was 13, I was obsessed with NOES (I saw a clip on TV of Johnny Depp getting eaten by the bed and just had to find out the context). That sort of spun out into my friends and I hunting down Cravens entire (at the time) oeuvre, getting into horror movies, and then having a 'thing' for genre movies as a whole. Even now it's probably one of my top 10 favourite movies.

In a way, he was actually very helpful to us in high school. Our before-the-age-of-the-Internet quest to find out everything there was to know about NOES lead us fairly early on to media analysis, which prepared us for what we'd have to do later with set texts.
