RIP Kenny Rogers

Played in his backup orchestra when he came to town. He looked and sounded great from behind. (Actually I was focused on the note ahead of me, as we had only rehearsed once, that afternoon, with his music director. But I do have a photo to prove it.) My wife enjoyed the show, and he threw plastic frisbees, IIRC.

Sad news. When I was a kid in the late '70s and into the early '80s, Kenny Rogers was an inescapable, dominating force. And not just on the radio, but on TV and in movies, too. The exposure was so thorough I can recite all the lyrics of songs I have not heard in going on 40 years.

What I did not know was how big Rogers was globally. The BBC had a story yesterday about how popular he was in Africa.

One of the first jokes I ever remember re-telling (I got it from the local TV cartoon show):

What did the truck driver say as he was going down the hill and one of his tires came off?
"You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel!"

Despite it being his entirely legacy, it comes as a surprise to many, but initially he wasn't really a country performer. Much more 60's hippie counter culture folk/rock.

His early stuff like the videos posted remind me a lot of Bachman Turner Overdrive.
