He was never one of my favorite writers, though he was a contributor to the New Wave in SF way back when (he was in Dangerous Visions). He was a sad, damaged person. I felt kind of sorry for him.

"High Rise" is by far my favourite Ballard! -I suppose we'll get the film now.

Billennium is the only one of his stories I read, but I did enjoy it. Freaked me out too.

Oddly, I don't think I was aware of his contributions to SF - I'd always thought of him as a literary author. I've added him to the list of SF luminaries who have passed away since last July, for inclusion in the In Memoriam reel we show every year at Polaris. (There are quite a few big names on it this year in comparison to past years. )
