RIP Gene Hackman, Dead at 95

CoveTom

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Gene Hackman, along with his wife and their dog, were found dead at their home yesterday. No foul play is suspected, but they have not said what caused the deaths. It seems unusual, of course, even if no foul play is involved. Regardless, it is sad and quite a loss. Hackman will always be the Lex Luthor to me, just as Christopher Reeve will always be Superman.

Requiescat in pace, Mr. Hackman.

Terrible fate for Hackman and his wife. Peace on their next journey.

I will always consider G.H. one of most talented, unique actors in film (and TV) history, and has one of the most re-watchable catalogs.

For fantasy fans, check out his performance in "The Spores", a 2nd season episode of The Invaders (10/1967), where his energy and magnestism as an actor outshined nearly all of his co-stars.

Obviously, he will be missed.

This was the second shocking death in as many days. I'm definitely curious to see how much we'll learn about what happened, because obviously something pretty serious must have occured for his wife and dog to die too. My first thought would be a CO2 or gas leak, but there are a few other possibilities too.

But it's OK for their dog?

And when was this decided? Because nobody told me. A life is a life, whether it's a person or a dog or whatever.
Why would you assume that is what was meant?
He specifically left off the dog.

Frankly, so would I, in the context of the overall post. Just as I don’t mourn a potted plant when it dies, or the flies and mosquitoes I routinely swat in summer, or the chickens I eat for dinner several times a week… If you adhere to a concept of radical equality of all life forms (I believe Jainism might apply), that’s your right, of course. It is not, however, a mainstream belief system, particularly in Western cultures, so I think you’ll find most people who post here would find your assumption puzzling, as I did. It’s simply not at all unusual in this circumstance for the dog’s fate to go unmentioned. That omission should in no way be read as an endorsement of the dog’s fate.

Shocking and tragic news. It will be very interesting to hear what actually happened – carbon monoxide makes the most sense with three dead, but the supposed condition of the bodies makes it seem like the deaths happened at different times.

You literally did the meme.

We could go into deep philosophical discussion on this, but your assertion is, frankly, absurd on its face. No, we do not equate human life with animal life. Never have, and never will. Yes, of course, if someone has the opportunity to prevent a dog from dying unnecessarily, I would hope they would. However, most people are simply not going to equate the loss of a dog's life to the loss of a human life, and rightly so.

As simple proof of this concept, imagine that a small child and a dog both run out into oncoming traffic at the same time and a passer-by happens to see this. They run into the road to help, but there is insufficient time to rescue both the child and the dog. Do you think that anyone in their right mind is going to choose to rescue the dog and let the child die? No, of course not. They will rescue the child, even if it means the dog dies.

...probably due to his assuming...

I know it's difficult to believe, because our society has gotten this so messed up, but see people are more important than dogs.

...yet JD is taking a tragedy and attempting (yet failing) to spin that into some position against dogs, when nothing of the sort was implied.

Indeed.

Yep.

Was startled by the news (though I knew he, at least, was in his mid 90s) largely because I watched Unforgiven last weekend with a buddy who had never seen it (shockingly enough considering just how many films he has seen).

I hope whatever mystery abounds proves ephemeral and his family finds closure. A fantastic actor who, regardless of the overall quality of a particular production, invariably elevated it just for being in it.

I just found it odd that he left out the dog in his post is all. I didn't mean for it to escalate the way it did and I apologize for my part in that. I originally meant for it to be semi tongue in cheek and then a couple of the posts in response to that irritated me a bit more than they probably should have. But as a vegan, and hard core believer in animal rights, seeing people brush aside the death of an animal as if it didn't matter pisses me off.
