RIP Frances Sternhagen

I keep thinking I need to rewatch "Outland."

If you don't, here's a first-half spoiler: FOOD SHIPMENT, MONTONE.

I suddenly realize her OUTLAND role could have been potentially played by Katharine Hepburn. Only took me 42 years to realize it.....they had a similar vibe at the time, I guess.

Interesting, given that Katharine Hepburn played the role in the film On Golden Pond that Sternhagen originated in the play of the same name (Ethel Thayer).

RIP to a great lady.

I always thought that Cliff’s mother in Cheers would’ve remained one of those oft-discussed but never-seen characters like Norm’s wife Vera, Er Indoors in Minder or (later) Merys in Frasier. So I was a bit wary when they introduced Ms Sternhagen as Esther Clavin. But she really excelled in the role and it didn’t prove to be one of those roles where your imagination exceeded the reality. And of course, her character in Misery was a totally new one just for the film, hadn’t been in the book, but was one of that movie’s highlights.

My favorite character in that movie…the polar opposite of poor Lambert in ALIEN.

Interesting comparison! The Lambert as written in Alan Dean Foster's ALIEN tie-in novel was at times tougher and rougher than the final film version. As played by Cartwright, Lambert was gradually and nearly-totally unhinged step-by-step. You could tell after Dallas bought it off-camera, she took his death hard and got sweatier by the minute.

Which is not to say Dr. Lazarus would have survived the alien much better, but she'd be at least as brave as Yaphet Kotto and might have been given a worthy exit line on the level of DOG SOLDIERS' Spoon....

''I've given injections tougher than that! Is that the best you can do, banana-head?''
