RIP Beatrice Arthur

Hi everyone:
I'm not sure whether or not this has been posted before so I'm gonna go ahead and be the one to post about it.
It has been reported that Beatrice Arthur(best known for her role as Dorothy Zbornack on the Golden Girls) passed away on April 25, 2009 from cancer. It has not been confirmed what type of cancer she died of but all we know is that she died peacefully in her Los Angelas home. She has two sons and a few granddaughters.
Before she died, she was doing lots of broadway shows and was really working til the end.
I was a huge fan of hers and when Mom told me the news the other day, I went from shock to extreme sadness. I had no idea she was sick or had any type of cancer. But all I know is that she was my favorite character on the Golden Girls and I always enjoyed her sarcastic wit and her hilarious comebacks with her co-stars. And I also loved her other shows, such as "Maude" and "All in the Family". She was great on those shows as well. But I remember her most as Dorothy in the GG. One hilarious comeback that gets me laughing so hard was the episode of the GG where Dorothy was getting dressed for a date and was deciding on which necklace to wear. She asked for her roommates' advice. Here's the abridged version of the dialogue that took place or that I can remember.
Dorothy: Blanche which necklace do you think will go better with this? The pearls or this one?
Blanche: well, these pearls draw attention to her turkey like neck.
Rose: yeah, well this short necklace draws way too much attention to her spare tire.
Dorothy: Maybe you should put a sign on my back that says "Too Ugly to Live". :guffaw:

And another funny comeback that I enjoyed was the ep where Rose was relying too much on some pills and had been taking them for more than 20 years.
Dorothy: Rose, I really think you should see someone about this.
Blanche: Well, I wouldn't recommend seeing a man at this time, Dorothy, but whatever suits you.
Dorothy: I was talking about seeing a psychiatrist, HOT PANTS! :guffaw:

May she rest in peace. I was wondering if anyone else here on TBBS loved her and what were your favorite comebacks of Dorothy on the show? :) This could be like a tribute thread to her. Thanks for reading.

She was so powerful as Maude on All In The Family that we were front row for her show (some 37 year ago ) which of course was a mega-hit. Our local CBS (Syracuse, NY) wouldn't play the (2-part?) 'abortion' episode in it's regular time slot, but I did stay up to watch when it aired at the safe hour of 11:30pm instead. Maude was brilliant and Bea Arthur is a legend.

Exactly. Not to take away from her later performance but she was probably the strongest female personality on tv at the time. She realllly frosted Archie's pumpkin!

Thanks, auntiehill. I wasn't for sure if there was a tribute to her or not. I do remember her as Maude on "All in the Family". She really did frost Archie at times! And he got her back with his Roosevelt comments. That show was a hoot..I'll also have to watch some of her other movies as well. I'm sure she was great in all of them.

I always loved her, "God will get you for that, Walter!"

No one could deliver a line like she did.

I never saw Golden Girls, but I watched Maude pretty frequently as a kid. Beatrice Arthur was a force to be reckoned with; I think there's a picture of her in the dictionary next to the word "acerbic." :D

It's very sad to see her become sick and pass away. She was a unique performer.

RIP, Ms Arthur. :(

Hmm..not a lot of Golden Girls watchers out there, eh? Well, that's ok..I watched that show as a kid cause I grew up in the 80s and Mom usually watched it every morning or evening. I never watched Maude very much because I wasn't born then...but did enjoy her character when I caught a few episodes of it on All in the Family. She could sure stare at someone sarcastically without even making a comment and it was hilarious. For instance, in GG when her mother was playing jokes on her and had a woopie cushion in her seat and she sat down..the look on her face was absolutely priceless!!!!! :guffaw:
