Rigel-7

Star Trek Rigel-7

This Trek show would not be aimed at die hard TREK fans at all. It would be aimed at the Dynasty/Dallas kind of viewer who is into to soap-opera plots, you know (sex, blackmail, paternity squabbles, sexual affairs) but sprinkled with scifi elements like Androids, the trafficking of Orion sex slaves, illegally enhanced humans. I think a show like that could make it, and attract women/men viewers, and I actually think Caprica is going to do just that. Maybe Caprical will not have those story elements. But something more along the lines of Dynasty than Star Trek or nuBSG is where I think they will take Caprica. Whether or not it is a hit, we shall see. But I too am going to ‘try’ with one of my NEW DEAL spokes over in the fan-fic.

The key here would be to center on the 'darker' elements of humanity. I think DS9 tried to do it, but wasn't allowed to push the envelope far enought to attract the new audience that Trek needs to last...

:techman: Very original.

Great idea!

You're right on the money about ST not focusing enough on humanity's 'darker' elements. Its true DS9 went there tad, not nearly enough though. DS9 just tapped the surface.

Concerning ST's {main} characters, the bulk of them, period, there's not enough, if any 'darkness' at all. They're not believable as real people.

Everyone has varying degrees/levels of 'darkness'.

That's the subtle thing about ALIEN & ALIENS which make those films more believable & real than most, if not all STAR TREK.

The characters in those films are written realistically.

The crew of the NOSTROMO, the Space Marines. The whole way everyone behaves & interacts in those 2 films: its natural.

Rigel-7 would be a great show. Might work better on HBO or SHOWTIME perhaps.

I agree..but I also agree with those who will no doubt say that TREK is about hope..and finding the better qualities of humanity, which is why Roddenberry may not have liked DS9 had he seen it.

And with my 'producer' hat on, I 'm would try to create a TREK for the "Alien" or other so called 'more realistic' shows. Yet, somehow, include some element of the human-equation in the mix.

I'd love to see a Star Trek show that was a bit more like Dallas/Heros. Where there are overlapping story lines, like a soap does, but has something for everyone...A hero, a 'gay' android, the back stabbing of a family, political and financial plot, mixed with Cloning or who knows what else...but a pallet of about 18 major characters who would come and go like they do on a Dallas or other serialized shows...

I agree that is what star trek is about, but I think the best why to show humanity finding it's better qualities, is by showing them contending with their worst.

Well.. Im gonna try. Over in the FANFIC section I have a story called THE NEW DEAL...its a story that has six seperate storylines taking turns...one of them is called RIGEL 7, ta da, and will center around a family as messed up as JR Ewings!!!

I really think that to keep the show Star Trek, you need some Starfleet presence. But you could easily have Starfleet be part of the mix, making contact with a wealthy space empire that is potentially useful to the Federation (for economic or strategic reasons) that Starfleet needs to put up with.

It doesn't have to be a known empire, and none of the existing ones really fit the bill. For "Dynasty in Space," I envision people more like the Centauri of B5 than any known Trek species.

Yep..I totally agree. I am focusing mine on a transplanted family that lives on Rigel 7. The father is very wealthy, he has a wife who sleeps around, as does, he. His oldest son is his chief business rival. His second son is stationed on a probe that was monitoring the Doomsday Machine. And the youngest child is a daughter who, like all the men in the family, also has an eye for women too...

Dallas in space...indeed..

Being realistic about this becoming a real show.

It would probably have a better chance as a B5 spin-off if you could translate characters/locations into their B5 analogues/equivalents/parallels.

B5's a darker more “realistic” place than ST as far as characters are concerned.

Oh, I totally agree. I'm trying though. In my fanfic I have already set the family particulars up and we will see where it goes...But generally, I agree with you about TREK being so cheery. But on a world like Rigel-7, I can skirt that cheery feeling and go for some dark stuff. Will it work? Don't know..thats the fun in writing it....but thanks for your words. They really do mean alot...
