Review that episode!

Here's how this works. I will name an episode. Next poster should leave a brief (as you like) review of that episode with their general thoughts. Then, they can name another episode for the next poster to review. Simple, no?

To start, could someone tell me what they think of Symbiosis?

The show's heart is in the right place, but the subject matter is handled rather ham-handedly, despite benefitting from exceptional guest stars.

Cause and Effect

Interesting treatment of the time loop in spite of a few obvious mistakes. Each loop is filmed and timed differently, which makes the show interesting instead of tedious . I'd put the episode in the top 20 of the series and top 50 of the franchise.

Code Of Honor

Interesting take on an episode, seeing Picard and Worf's families. Its not my favorite episode, and not my least, its just kinda there

Time Squared

A solidly entertaining episode, maintained mostly by a good performance from Patrick Stewart, despite being a somewhat mundane script treatment of a moderately decent idea. TNG would come to do so many better time anomaly episodes, that this one doesn't stand out, but it's not bad either.

Realm of Fear

An OK episode. A lot of Barclay's scenes are good, but the story is a bit slight. A lot of tech talk in this one too, though looking inside the transporter beam was different.

Cost of Living

In my opinion a weak episode. When a character is annoying to the other characters of a show, it's shouldn't be annoying to the audience as well. There are only two decent episodes featuring Lwaxana Troi and this isn't one of them.

The Neutral Zone

On the verge of the writers strike that almost killed the show, the frustrated and barely interested Head Writer finds a fan fiction story and bafflingly attaches it to a two-part story idea that sadly didn't follow through until 16 episodes later.

Underwhelming and confused finale.

Data's Day

A great (and amusing) slice of life approach to TNG, showing us a "typical" day on board the Enterprise. A wedding, the death of a Vulcan ambassador, and Data learning to dance. What's not to like? All the featured players turn in very pleasing performances, and the drama subplot is kept suitably light.

The Price

One of my favorite episodes of the whole series. The plot is interesting, sensitive and allows us to learn something about Picard. I wish there had been more like this one.

Darmok

Interesting plot, with Picard being stuck on a planet with an enemy not easily seen, with an alien whose only method of communication is metaphor. Its interesting how their language developed into nothing but metaphor and legends. I think Picard shows what makes him a great captain in this episode.

Dark Page

Not really my cup of tea, but objectively speaking, a very good episode, and easily the best performance Majel gives on the entire series, & the only serious development that character ever got, short of some well needed dramatics in the euthanasia episode, (see below)

Half A Life

Actually a really great Lwaxana episode! Finally we see her as vulnerable and not annoying. The scene with Troi and Lwaxana in the transporter where Lwaxana breaks down had me getting a little teary-eyed too. The story is a great comment on ageism that still holds up today. And it was brave for TNG not to close with an easy or convenient ending. A strong story, great performances, and adding depth and sympathy to a character I had written off as mediocre comic relief. I personally love this one.

Final Mission

An interesting last mission for Wesley. Certainly not one of the stronger episodes, but there were some nice moments between Wes and Picard.

Samaritan Snare

Mrs Rune: <calling out> Hugo, I've got Next Gen's on DVD. Coming down?
Hugo: Which one is it?
Mrs Rune: Uh, I don't know, but it's got the early uniforms
Hugo: Mmm, not selling it!
Mrs Rune: Oh, it's the one where Picard refuses to be operated on by Pulaski and goes on a shuttle trip with Wesley
Hugo: Huh, don't remember that. That sounds dumb. That really was a thing?
Mrs Rune: Yeah
Hugo: Still not selling it
Mrs Rune: You know, the one where Geordie's kidnapped by aliens with who have the Khaleesi's eyebrows and speak like Joey Essex
Hugo: A Geordie episode?
Mrs Rune: Well, yeah, I guess
Hugo: Not a chance
Mrs Rune: But he's not weird and creepy around the opposite sex in this one, and Riker has that sneaky clever plan to overcome the Padalecki's
Hugo: Don't bring your Wincest stuff into this, Mom
Mrs Rune: So I'm watching this on my own then? Seriously, please, just come out of the den
Hugo: What one's next, I'll come down for that, maybe
Mrs Rune: Umm, Up the Long Ladder
Hugo: Arrghhgggghgh

Up The Long Ladder ;)

Oh dear. A poor effort here. Riker and Pulaski just glibly kill their clones, whilst dodgy Irish stereotypes abound on the Enterprise. Meh.

The Ensigns of Command

A fun episode, with a lot of good Data scenes, as well as a clever resolution to the Sheliak crisis. This is where TNG started to get better.

Galaxy's Child

Had a huge crush on Dr Leah Brahms myself when I was younger.

Never fell in love with a digital version of her that I had created to recognise my own unsung genius, mind.

Love how disparaging Brahms generally is of Geordie and on looking back, this is a good look at the current bullshit "friendzone" drama that so many uninvolved, needy men have taken to the interwebs to meme the tears from their frigid souls about. Why should Brahms have any interest in Geordie and Geordie seriously needed to get over the fact that it's his problem, not hers, that she's not interested.

Still, pregnant Space-fish getting a post-mortem C-section has an air of emotive drama to it and Pattie Stew sells that stuff like he's stood on the stage at The Globe - as always
