Wow. Such a dare actually existed. For season four. And Moore wanted to do something similar in DS9 (which, thankfully, became "Trials and Tribbleations" instead.

And I thought "The Naked Now" was cringe inducing...

There was an old post from 2007 or so talking about this subject, but it's true, Iotans, revisiting, the "Let's save money by going to 1920s Gangster World but we're not 'Sliders'.", everything.

That really sounds bad.

These guys really like using the phrase "high concept" don't they? When I see it attached to episodes like this it reminds me of Badger's Star Trek pitch on Breaking Bad..

What I find interesting is that Piller apparently didn't watch "A Piece of the action" before writing this pitch, because he can't recall why the Iotians were copying the 20s Gangsters.

Waitasec, isn't this in Lora Johnson's "Worlds of the Federation" book, as what happened to the planet post-TOS?

EDIT: Reads whole article, they mention it.

I've heard this before. I think it would have been a weird fit for TNG. I do think it would have been fun to see that Q olympics episode which I know was something they thought about for in coming up with a season 5 episode for Q.

I wish they had explored more TOS episodes in canon. There were a lot of things to follow up on. Even in Next Gen or later, I would have enjoyed a follow up to the episode, Conspiracy. Maybe Voyager could have encountered that race? Oh well
Not really interested in non canon sources, although this one will remain one of my favorite non canon ST products. This story would have been a killer movie plot, although hard to actually film back then

Didn't the Conspiracy bugs get re-written into the Borg?

TNG making a sequel to the episode “A Piece Of The Action” resonates with me. I like it, a lot, actually. Were it handled appropriately, it could've come off as very cool, actually. It wouldn't have worked as a comedy, it would have to be like American Gangster, though, or something like that. Unfortunately, I'm sure that Michael Piller did not have this in mind. And the temptation to have Captain Picard pose as Dixon Hill for this proposed show would've been too great to ignore, I'm sure. But to revisit the planet Sigma Iotia II only to discover that the mobster scene there had gotten much more dark and dangerous would've really been a sweet deal ...

On the TNG Season 3 Bluray, Melinda Snodgrass said she and Hans Beimler and Richard Manning pleaded to do this episode during season 3 but they were told that it was "stupid". Sounds like it was Rick Berman who killed the idea. Funny how the idea floated around long enough for it to be considered for a potential DS9 episode.
