"Resistance" how could they speak without communicator?

The Next Generation

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
In the episode "resistance" captain janeway, tuvok and b´elanna get into a fight and janeway gets hit on the head and looses her communicator.

When she is awake she talks with caylem but apperently in english and without her communicator. :wtf:

Also tuvok and b´elanna are talking with augris in english.

And one thing that bothers me too, is that janeway always wanted to prevent that federation technology falls in to the wrong hands, and that the prime directive is the most importent thing, yet they never searched for the lost communicators.

I know its just a tv show but i wanted to point that out. :)

Here's a star for you!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say maybe it's possable some other species in the galaxy also speaks English. Just like the dudes in "Nemesis".

As usual, the Lynx has the answer:

The B&B device! :bolian:

The solution is the B&B device, named after two important persons in the 20th century who did foresee the development of the future. The B&B device is a very small microchip which is attached to the inner ear and which immediately starts when the ship's computer universal translator is unavailable and the combadges are removed or destroyed. In that way, different species can continue to communicate.

Maybe they had Universal Translators of their own.

No warp-capable space-faring civilization should be without one, really.

Were B'Elanna and Tuvok in verbal communication range at the time? Maybe only someone's communicator has to be functional.
