The race for the Republican nomination is saturated with candidates. While most of them might be set up for a defeat against Hillary, who is most likely to take the nomination?

I think it's too early to say. All of them have significant ideological flaws, likely fatal, so I'm waiting to see who emerges for the GOP to say "Blurgh, eh, okay, we'll pick that guy and pretend he's the greatest Republican ever."

I agree that it's an early bet, but I think its an interesting race now because there is a great deal of diversity in the candidates.

Rand Paul - An ideological Libertarian
Donald Trump - A billionaire business man
Jeb Bush - A candidate trying to separate himself from a family "dynasty."
Ben Carson - A brain surgeon with no political background and the only African American in the race
Chris Christie - A "moderate" who carried a heavily Democratic state
Ted Cruz - A "tea party" candidate
Carly Fiorina - The only female in the race
Lindsey Graham - A career politician
Mike Huckabee - A former candidate who has gained popularity as a talk show host
Bobby Jindal - The only Indian American in the race
Marco Rubio - A younger candidate of Hispanic descent
Rick Santorum - A religious right candidate

Being straightforward, all I see are a bunch of inflexible ideologues who have no understanding of how normal people live and work. I don't really care much for their gender, or their skin color.

The only one who has received a modicum of interest from me is John Kasich, who is our governor. While he's most assuredly Republican, he has shown more flexibility and nuance than the rest of the candidates combined.

"Flexibility" probably won't win him the Republican nomination though. And, while race may not be an important characteristic, some people do consider it at the ballot box for various reasons.

Bush. He has the money, he has the institutional support, and his campaign is one of "I'm not an evil whacko."

Flexibility is one of the reasons I don't think Kasich will survive the nomination process. He looks too much like a RINO, even though he most assuredly is conservative with many of his policies.

Statistically speaking, most black people vote for Democrats. So a black Republican has to contend with his or her political affiliation, and the fact that most Republicans are older, white male voters.

This also works against any female GOP candidates as well. Of course, one of the more popular candidates, Marco Rubio, enjoys broad appeal. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Rubio, but he's going to face some serious backlash, when it comes to immigration, once the ball starts rolling towards the finish line.

Which is why at this point I'm not sure who really has the best chance.

ETA: Bush may seem like the best choice, as Dennis mentions above, but he has that last name which might really work against him, but who knows? People forget the past very quickly.

Let me fix those for you.

Rand Paul - Lunatic stuck in the late 18th century
Donald Trump - Lunatic stuck on another planet
Jeb Bush - The least terrible choice, but still a Bush
Ben Carson - Must have done brain surgery on himself because craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy
Chris Christie - A corrupt, bullying scumbag
Ted Cruz - Egomaniac
Carly Fiorina - Destroyed HP
Lindsey Graham - Second-rate Ted Cruz
Mike Huckabee - A monstrous excuse for a human being, possibly the most concentrated turd of hatred and malice in the GOP
Bobby Jindal - No significant differentiators other than being a person of color; crazy, but not enough to stand out
Marco Rubio - More laughably ignorant than evil
Rick Santorum - Fundie who runs for President as a full-time job because not even Fox News wants to give him a salary

I think last man standing is Jeb Bush si.biliary to the way Mitt survived the primaries I. 12 and McCain in 08

The GOP party has been an establishment-supporting group of increasingly mind-numbing progressives. They'll nominated first and foremost a progressive, with Jeb and the Bush dynasty being first, and Krispy Kreme Christie second -- in other words another progressive loser they and people like Karl Rove will tell us is the only person who can win and that if we don't rally around them, we can't win. Then their mush pick will lose and try to blame us for it.

If for some reason they don't pick the obvious progressives as in previous presidential races, they'll co with someone who can likely be co-opted or already supports left-wing agendas (I see two of those on that list).

The GOP wil not pick what's good for the United States.

And nobody and their grandmother gives a fuck about Linsday Graham. He's the biggest non-event since things like the Leap Second, the XFL and "Daddio".

Progressives? I don't see anybody on the GOP ticket that could rationally be called progressives.

There's at least five on that list, unless you are taking "progressive" another way.

Oh, I forgot: fuck you Karl Rove.

Being a huge football fan, I enjoyed the XFL (even if it was second rate). It was fun having football to watch in the spring.

Just out of curiosity, who do you want to get the nomination? Or do you not like any of the candidates running?

Progressives are usually supporters of regulation and labor rights. Who are these five, and how in any sense are they to be considered as progressives?

Yeah, I'd love to know who the five "progressive" GOP candidates are, and what about them makes them "progressive."

There are certainly a couple candidates in there who have more centrist policies than others (Jeb Bush being the frontrunner), but none of them have anything even remotely resembling a progressive or left-wing platform by any rational or commonplace usage of the word.

You're clearly using the extremist Tea Party/right wing blog purity test definition of conservatism and liberalism/progressivism that would paint even your god-president Reagan as a progressive were he running today instead of just existing in that mythical age that was the 80s.

Fixed that for you...

The idea that any of the Republican candidates are progressive is an idea that would be mocked on the Daily Show along with a clip of a FOX News lunatic.

When conservatives co-opt a label that some of their opponents self-identify with and redefine it to suit their own ends, as is being done here with the term "progressive," that's a sign that they're afraid of those opponents. Chin up, fellow progressives.
