Repackaged DVD sets

Sigh.

I just bought season two of SG: Atlantis (I had 1, 3 & 4 already).

It arrived in a single, full-sized DVD case, with FIVE discs inside. Personally, I kind of like that. Saves space. But all the other seasons I have are boxed thin cases of two or one disc each. You see my dilemma. They don't work together. Yeah, I'm kinda anal like that.

So I'm going to be ordering the other sets (again) so they match. Watch me flip if they're the old packaging. (Amazon only shows the old box art, even though the new one I ordered has a different design).

I hate it when they do that.

At least with the different clam shell thicknesses they can be lined up on the shelf and identified by the title on the spine of the clam shell. Weird packaging like that used with many of the Star Trek sets, the Cylon head Battlestar Galactica package and the character head Simpsons packages interferes with that bookshelf style storage capability.

Some of the traditional cases have different features. I'm a lot more comfortable with the cases that release the clips in the disk hole when the center of the hub is pressed. I still haven't figured out what some companies were thinking of when they designed what appears to be a depression to get your fingers under the edge of a disk, but include a narrow ridge around the disk that blocks the area under the disk anyway.

I could also do without some of the inserts with poor contrast between the text and background (like brown text on a black background).

There is something to be said for checking these things out in a store first. Seriously - it's doubtful Amazon will suddenly run out of stock, so they can wait. Unless you live in a part of the world without a Best Buy or whatever, if you're concerned about ordering, I'd simply wait till they hit the stores, look at them there, and then decide whether to order them or not (or, better still, save the postage and the waiting time and buy them on the spot).

I know this doesn't work for everything - no shop in my city, for example, has bothered to stock Kojak Season 2 so I anticipated Amazoning it - but Stargate releases appear to be dime a dozen, even in places like Wal-Mart.

It's a little frustrating when studios re-release boxed sets in slimmer, space-saving packaging after they've been out for a while. I've got the original, thick boxed sets for series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Alias which take up a fair amount of space on my shelf. Nowadays, you can buy them in slim DVD cases that take up hardly any room at all. I don't need a giant box to show off or display.... slimmer is better.

It annoyed me when Stargate did it, but the other way around. I have seasons 1-8 in the huge, thick boxes and they rock, but alas my seasons 9 and 10 are in a thin style and dont match...

It's even more annoying when they change the packaging over time, for the same release series. My West Wing DVD-collection begins with huge boxes, and ends up with a normal DVD-folder. Crazy.

I don't need a big box but I do like a box. And I like it when they're all the same size & type. I'm much more reticent to buy a series when there's an irregularity to the season boxes. Sadly, there are some shows where this seems to be unavoidable, like Law & Order.

I stuck with the large boxes for Buffy & Angel but I did trade in all of my old Seasons 1-8 of Stargate SG-1 for the medium size boxes. (I got to do this for free since I worked at a used DVD store at the time.) I won't even consider the new, ultra-slim DVDs for Stargate SG-1 & Stargate Atlantis because I don't like the way they changed the box art.

This is merely a sign that Satan really does exist.

Fortunately, the upcoming complete series set will fix that. ;)
