When it first came out, Star Trek: The Next Generation was a perfect name. It was after all, the next generation of Star Trek.
Then we had, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise, so to the uninitiated, it's the next generation... to what?
If you were to name Star Trek: The Next Generation today (maybe for a reboot series or movie), knowing that there'd be more series to follow, would you come up with a different name to identify it better? What about something like Star Trek: Galaxy Class? Star Trek: 1701-D? Star Trek: Enterprise*? Star Trek: The Night Garden? (The advantage of the last one it would still be TNG!
)
*Of course, the actual Star Trek: Enterprise would not have been made yet so it would have to be called something else entirely... but that's another thread.
