TV Shows on DVD is reporting that Remembrance of the Daleks is finally being released in North America in March 2010, more than 2 years after it was yanked from the release schedule.

Unfortunately it appears the BBC weren't able to come to terms regarding the use of the Beatles song so it has been removed. In this story it's not a big deal as it's just some background music (I assume they aren't cutting the scene itself). It doesn't bode well for the inclusion of Ticket to Ride in the expected DVD release of The Chase.

Dang, I guess I shouldn't have bought the original release earlier in the year. Oh well.

Hasn't Remembrance been available on DVD in Region 1 since the early part of this decade? I distinctly remember getting it on Netflix when I was still in college (2002/2003).

Yes. This is a special edition ... more stuff, cleaned-up print and whatnot.

I'd never heard of it being released before now, but in any event this is a Special Edition, suggesting the earlier version must have been vanilla. Certainly the BBC (and the Doctor Who News Page) are treating this as if it'd never seen release over here before, so it must have been a low distribution. I've never seen it in the shops here in Alberta otherwise I'd have bought it myself.

Alex, the first edition of "Remembrance" came out in 2002, according to Amazon. I'd say it was distributed as well as, if not better than, any other Doctor Who DVD of the time. I wouldn't call it vanilla, but I don't recall, off-hand, what the extras were.

At the time, Warners intended to do vanilla DVD releases of the stories that were new on video at the time, but fan backlash scuttled that. I have never hated Doctor Who fandom as much as I did then; I thought it was a churlish and selfish move for fandom to revolt against the DVD format like that.

It's definitely been released over here - I picked up a copy for a friend in 2003 (IIRC for the corrected effects), and I've since seen it for sale in stores here in Kitchener as well as in Toronto...

Special features on the first R1 DVD release:

Commentary by Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred
Deleted scenes and out-takes
Multi-angle scenes
Pop-up production notes option
BBC1 Trailers
Music-only option
Photo gallery
Who's who

Pretty typical of the earlier DVD releases. And it was no harder to find than any of the other DVDs; I probably got this here in Ottawa or in London, Ontario.

I'm not really crazy about the BBC doing special edition DVD reissues; it's expensive enough already to keep up, and worse if you'd already bought dozens of episodes on VHS.

Yeah, Remembrance was one of the first Who dvd's I bought. No particularly spectacular extras, but honestly I don't see anything on the new version that makes it worth a double dip.

Remembrance of the Daleks was the first Doctor Who DVD I bought way back in 2002. I probably won't double dip for the new release although I appreciate the effort.

I guess I'll have to import the R2 version, then... :angryrazz:
