Rejected/selected by the Borg

Or who want to steal their tech and create their own collective, for better purposes. Like imagine having a team of scientists working on a project whose minds are connected and can work faster in tandem than apart, having meetings to review findings, etc.

Someone may very well have done that. With horrific results.

For all we know, that's how the Borg started in the first place... trying to merge person with machine for better efficiency, speed, etc.

I might not have been clear in my idea. Apologies for the confusion. Let me see if I can clarify.

What I mean by the Borg having all their knowledge going back in time is they already have the technology from the 24th century Federation, too. They have assimilated lots of Starfleet officers and ships, so they already have the technology either in the sphere or by using the collected knowledge, which they can rebuild whatever technology they need.

Plus, given Data's population count of the altered Earth, I don't think there are fewer overall people in the past. (Though admittedly, it's more likely to be fewer than the 24th century.) Without the Federation in the way, the Borg can have the entire Alpha Quadrant, and likely a good chunk of the Beta Quadrant and possibly have started on the Gamma Quadrant (assuming they know about the Bajoran wormhole), assimilated by the time FIRST CONTACT begins. Then reconnect with the Delra Quadrant Borg. Their goal of assimilating the entire galaxy happens centuries before it was meant to.

If it's the raw materials they're interested in, why not go back to 1 million BC rather than 2063AD as far as the solar system is concerned? They would have still more raw resources, and more time to realise their goal.

Also, I don't buy that the Federation and all other AQ powers combined could stop or even significantly delay the Borg if they really wanted to invade the Alpha Quadrant and they sent a fleet of a hundred or a thousand cubes. (In-universe, I mean, of course the writers would always make Our Heroes survive in some way. And of course this is also before the Borg were degenerated to the relatively easy-to-beat antagonists of VOY).

Ah, but at that time, there were a lot of spacefaring ships that can easily be converted into Borg.

And what I meant by a Federation is this... a group of different ideas and backgrounds and cultures coming up with various technologies that combined work more effectively than they could do on their own.

As far as the Borg not sending more than one cube per trip... I don't know. My main goal was trying to figure out the time travel plan by them.
