Redesigning the Silurians/Sea Devils

Chris227

Lieutenant Commander
Any thoughts if they ever make a return appearence, what they should look like? The 'armored' look for "Warriors of the Deep" didn't quite work, perhaps a return to the classic vest look for the Sea Devils?

I don't think CG is a good option (Except for the ocassional army shot, or for the Myrka should they reuse it), since a lot of what made the Silurians and Sea Devils work in their first appearence was the way they moved (Again, something that stunk in "Warriors"). Also would make the relationship between the species a bit more obvious-perhaps have the Silurians have more of a protruding head and fins that fall back a bit (Although not quite like the hybrid in The Scales of Injustice novel).

I kind of liked the Japanese styled armor on the Sea Devils in Warrior Of The Deep they just didn't have the money to pull it off properly. I realy don't have a problem with that version of the Silurians either but jsut with the Sontarans they need to be less rigid.

I like the samurai Sea Devil look, too.

I'd like to see a better way to indicate which one is speaking. In Doctor Who and the Silurians, they would always gesticulate rather ridiculously. But then in Warriors of the Deep, we learn that a species apparently involved with a flashing light on its head to indicate speech. I guess I'm asking for a better mouth prosthetic.

Any thoughts if they ever make a return appearance, what they should look like?

Hopefully they would look better than the fish-like creatures (the 'Hath' I think) from "The Doctor's Daughter." Those guys looked ridiculous!

I don't think CG is a good option...

I don't know, new who has a fairly good track record of decent looking CG aliens. If they could do for the Silurians and Sea Devils what they did with the Werewolf from series two....I think it could work really well. :)

So long as their outfiits are better than they were in Warriors we should be ok!

Perhaps they should be naked (tastefully naked obviously!!)

An idle thought: Why don't appearance-changes like these inspire arguments about canonicity, as they often seem to do in Trek discussions? Mind you, I'm glad they don't . . . but can you imagine the response if, say, in their next onscreen appearance, the Klingons were all portrayed as being really short, and none of the characters commented on this being unusual?

The thing with Who though is, is that the main three bad guys are either partially mechanical(Daleks, Cybermen) or can regenerate or steal bodies (The Master). Even then, there's been some debate as to why certain Cybermen look more advanced than 'later' Cybermen. For instance the Cybermen in the Invasion (Which takes place in the 60s or 70s depending on your idea of UNIT ating) looking obviously better than the Cybermen in the Tenth Planet (Which takes place in 1986). As for Sontarans, although they're supposed to be all clones, since obviously the original Sontaran actor can't do it anymore and there have been many changes in Sontaran makeup, the general 'fanon' explanation is that there are multiple 'prime' clone sources.

There's been a few books written that have tried to address these continuity problems, such as Cybermen, A History of the Universe and it's followup Ahistory. In the new series they've largely ignored past continuity issues, partially due to the alternate universe Cybermen.
